What do you get for writing songs that were better than even Bob Dylan?
Three decades of obscurity, poverty and back-breaking construction work.
The guy in question Rodriguez made a couple of records in 1970-71 that are as good as any album recorded in last 50 years in U.S. but you won't find them in any record store in America!
In 2012 a documentary on Rodriguez by a young swedish guy named Malik Bendjelloul was released. That documentary help popularise music of Rodriguez.
It was Malik's first film of any sort and it went onto win almost every award out there including Academy, Bafta, Sundance. Malik committed suicide a year later.

A big irony here is the case of Malik Bendjelloul; Malik told the story of an artist who never got what he deserved, in doing so Malik got everything he deserved. End of the day the one who never got anything is still alive and the one who got everything is dead!
