Used to cycle

fatmac

As i was here, thought I'd throw something in.  :)

Most of my life I have been a keen cyclist, not serious sport type riding, just going where I please.

When I was fit, in my heyday, I would cycle 100+ miles on a nice summer Sunday.
I would get up & have breakfast then head out to our starting point, & then on the ride, I would have 11's (cafe stop), lunch, including a pint or two, tea (another cafe stop), & get back home for my dinner.  ::)

I don't do a lot of cycling now, but still enjoy it when I do go out. However, I've been eating as if I were still putting in the miles, hence my body has grown a bit & that is why I use 'fatmac' on the forums, to remind me that I must lose some weight!  ::)

Only got broadband (internet) in the last 3 years or so, & I had promised myself that I would give something back to the (linux) community when I could. I probably spend too much time fiddling with my computers, but it keeps me off the streets.  ;)

Good to see another cyclist around here.

I've gotten away from it in the last few years, but now that I have gotten my oldest off training wheels I have started to get some semi-regular riding in. Knees complain about it a lot more than I remember. Probably the result of moving to a more humid climate.

Another cyclist here too.. I have also gotten away from it lately... I also enjoyed the day long treks that fatmac talked about

I have had a couple of very nasty spills cycling that scared me enough to stop riding like a fearless teenager... I need to get out my bike and tune it up and get out again

Mine needs to be tuned up as well. We have moved twice in the last 5 years - wife has to keep transferring to stay employed - and the movers have not been kind to my bike. Got the wife and kid's bikes fixed up fine, but mine needs a bit more effort.

Picked up a newish one for my oldest from the neighbors yard sale - taller bike for her; she is starting to get into it more so hopefully we can stretch out the rides.

Nice to see I'm not the only cyclist on here.  :)

 Resurrecting a Necro thread ..  ;D
Just noticed this cyclist thread.
I am a long time cyclist. Actually since boyhood. Carried the love of cycling into my adult years..
For years did Century Rides but haven't done one in at least 3 yrs by my count. Up to about 3 yrs ago I would aim for about 3000 miles outside rides annually. I am a great fan of Club time trials and would ride them when training time would allow. All winter I would ride either my Turbo Trainer or Rollers 3-5 times a week... All the aforementioned is that I am trying to send the Message " I Love Cycling"  :D

My wife gets annoyed when I watch the Various Tours on the Sports channels. She comments "How do you find that Interesting" ... Hard to explain the Vicarious ride that you take while watching as well as the Scenery, Commentary, Stats and History that you Soak up... Great Stuff!!

My current Bikes are a Cannondale "Red Shred", Specialized "Rock Hopper", Ross Professional Race, and
A KMX recumbent  tadpole "3 wheel"
The Ross is  a trip.. a real late 70s early 80s Road/Criterium bike. Chrome-Moly frame 73 degree angles and a Shimano 600 derailleur and Brake set. The bike runs 700c Mavics on Shimano 600 hubs the wheels built by me... "

ah, is this the thread in here where we go if we dont really have a life outside of our geekery, but still want to socialise it up forum style?

i used to cycle too.
as of a few months back, i have something about just as mid engined and rear wheel drive as someone on a bicycle, but now it eats petrol, has 4 wheels, and two sunroofs.
i dont cycle much anymore.

^  Apologies..
I missed your post and just wanted to say .. Intrigued.. as you just hit upon my Next most favorite Outside hobby.
Sporty, rear wheel drive and sucking up petrol.
.. So, what is the rear wheel drive ride  ?  :)

i'll let that particular mystery float a little longer.  ^_^

the clues i give to people regarding my wheels, has even gear heads baffled.

mid engined, rear wheel drive, two sunroofs, seats 4, with more leg room in the back than a maybach.  this one's japanese, but the italians have their own version too.

no one has ever guessed correctly yet.   not even close.   XD

ps, i'd love a fold up touring bike... that'd fit in my car's tiny boot space.

sqlpython

hmmm.. Toyota Previa or Nissan E51

oh, heh, the game is up... as of a few minutes ago in chat.  i'll spoil the guessing game for the rest of you, so i can cease disrupting this thread with non-cycling stuff.

Yep, that was my very next guess..  ::)

a few days back, i started  to dismantle my old rusty bike (not the one that's only just starting to rust), with the intent of converting portiions of it into a VAWT (verticle axis wind turbine).  i think that should keep the workload down compared to trying to build my own vawt from the ground up, attempting to carve my own rotary bits out of wood.  ^_^

may go some way to make up for me not cycling so much since getting the hydrocarbon guzzler.   in terms of environmentall impact (maybe eventually financial too... petrol is bloody expensive!)

just another idea of what to do with that old bike.

If the project goes on, I for one would like to read of your progress... interesting..

well dont hold your breath, it's a project i've wanted to do for something like over 8 years now... though this is the biggest push i've had towards actually making progress on it...  iirc i think it came the day after i first took a 5-htp supplement... will need to take another of those tonight to see if it will help a repeat performance of progress making.  ^_^

i suppose i'll split off to a dedicated thread for the project if i do pick up momentum with it.  ... should likely take pictures to document the whole thing too... that'll likely help spur me on a bit too.
