Mplayer2

VastOne

I have loaded mplayer2 and am now using it in GMB as the backend audio instead of gstreamer

I have found mplayer2 uses less resources than gstreamer and it sounds better on my HD audio setup

I installed mplayer2 from debian multimedia, it is the latest git version

sudo apt-get install mplayer2

You also have to do this from terminal once it is installed

cp /etc/mplayer/input.conf ~/.mplayer/input.conf

Then in GMB select mplayer as the Audio backend under Settings/Audio tab

All of this will be the default in the next ISO build

You are using this for GMB - I don't do much music here but ... here they come - questions:

  1. How would that stack up against umplayer (for videos and movies)?
  2. Why experimental and not just the SID repos?
  3. Does Umplayer play nice with Mplayer2?
  4. I see there is a SMPlayer2 as well - recommended ??

SMPlayer2 is a fork of the orignal SMPlayer, optimized for MPlayer2.
This is just a temporary solution until mplayer2 gets a new IPC mechanism !

Worth it?  OK, that's an opinion.

I only use UMplayer for videos

This is only a change because it works so well in GMB and is not related to anything else, although it will enhance the sound quality from anything that uses mplayer

Experimental because it has the latest git version

UMplayer still works just the same without any changes

I am not using or seeing a need for SMplayer2

That's good enough for me.

EDIT:  It removed mplayer (cli version installed by umplayer) but YEA, if I notice the sound difference in my headphones it's gotta be good!

Thank you!

You will see an edit to the OP above.  Debian Multimedia actually had a newer git version of mplayer2

For you Sector11 and anyone who installed from Experimental, you will see a new mplayer2 package when you do a

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

That is fine to let it update
