VSIDO Installer Question

lwfitz

I built a new machine and decided to do a fresh install and ran into a weird issue.

New machine specs:

Asus z390m motherboard
Intel i9 9900k cpu
Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card
64GB DDR4 ( corsair vengeance 2400) Ram
Storage: 250gb m.2 nvme (Adata XPG), 250gb m.2 sata (Sandisk), 2 1tb Patriot SSD's (raid0) and a 4tb seagate drive.

I was getting a weird kernel panic at first but updating fixed that I think.

The issue I had was that when the installer started checking for drives to configure it seemed to stall out but wasn't actually frozen because it responded when I closed the installer.
Disconnecting the two patriot ssd's allowed the installer to find the drives and my install only took a few seconds once I got passed there.

Any ideas what would cause the installer to stall out like that? Doesn't seem to be hardware related as it's all new (except the sandisk sata m.2) and I don't get any errors other than that.

So you are saying when checking for drives it sees nothing but are you also saying it looks as if there is a scan going on at that time?

I am having similar issues on a new ISO I have built where nothing is being seen for drives even though they are obviously there.. Both machines I am testing on have SSD drives...

If this is true, this is a major step in solving this since it points to a specific issue and not just an fstab issue

To be clear, this is the iso from April '18 (?). I downloaded the latest from the download page.

After entering my user credentials the installer goes to the window that says "managing disks", or something similar. It then just stalls and I can't click forward, back or cancel but I can X out and at that point it asks if I want to cancel the installer.
I'll send screen shots and the terminal output when I get home.

Not really an issue as I got installed but this is the first time I've seen this and since it's new hardware I'm trying to make sure it's software related and not faulty hardware

No need for screen shots I am seeing the same things on both the April 2018 ISO and the new ones I just built. What I was wondering is if you were actually seeing a stall hourglass when this was happening since that would be new to what I am seeing.. My question is why disconnecting the Patriot SSD's mattered..

It is also strange that the same thing is happening on VirtualBox install environment where the only thing setup is SATA drives...

Is it possible for you to run liveCD again with the Patriots enabled and get me a copy / view of the fstab and then run it again with them disabled and get me a look at that fstab too

Thanks

This is a Debian issue because I never had this issue with the April 2018 release and now it is with both the 2018 ISO and the new ones I have built

Absolutely I can do that. I'll be home around 11 and will get it posted.
Haven't seen any hourglass, the installer just seems to stall. In fact I ran the installer from a terminal to see what, if any errors I had but there weren't any at that point.

Excellent Luke thanks.. You should also have SpaceFM open too and you can see that the installer is actually doing what it's supposed to do refreshing the drives right as the gparted part happens

I am going to run the refracta installer (it's on all the LiveCD's I'll post info for you if you need it) to see what it does

Running the refracta installer at least gives me a specific message

'something is wrong (null)/dev/sda is not a block device'

So at least we have something to work with now...  Doing a quick search of that error does not show anything obvious or anything from within the last 15 years...

This leads me to believe it is something very basic that I am missing

So wasn't there a fix back when the nvme drives started showing up?  Would the same issue be affecting the Patriot SSD's?  Just grasping at hay here...  :-\

I gotr around the NVME error by loading VSIDO to ram and formating my drive with gparted rather than the installer. This seems to work each time as I've done it on multiple machines.

So, here is the

terminal output without the Patriot drives connected

And again fstab is empty

Stupid question but, fstab is in the normal place during a live session correct? Im not checking the wrong file? /etc/fstab?

QuoteThis is a Debian issue because I never had this issue with the April 2018 release and now it is with both the 2018 ISO and the new ones I have built

I think it's more of an installer issue.

Not sure what this means:

Error retrieving accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: .....

Is the installer written in python? Maybe some deprecation issues?

I've had the installer (april 2018 iso) hang at the manage disks/partitioning stage - partitioning the disk prior to running the installer was the fix as I recall. Like this:

Quotegotr around the NVME error by loading VSIDO to ram and formating my drive with gparted rather than the installer

Also, on my dual boot systems where Windows occupies /dev/sda, the installer has never (5+ installs) written grub to /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc. I always have to reboot and chroot into the system to install grub.

Now you have this error -

something is wrong (null)/dev/sda is not a block device'

Tells me that your installer is having issues with:

1. Identifying  hard drives
2. Writing to hard drives even though they were identified.

Sort of like writing data to /dev/null - the data is discarded, but the operation goes to completion without an error message.

@vastone - in the other thread, you were saying the fstab was blank/incomplete? I interpreted that as an install of the new 2019 build went to completion but an fstab wasn't created. Did you attempt to chroot into the install and attempt to manually create an fstab, or check the partition layout to verify they were created?

So recently, (Last May) this MSI lappy went to the wife and a brand new (almost $200) Win 10 Pro install on it.  Now it is mine again.  A month ago I did a dual boot as PackRat says above with the same results though a different solution.  I also Installed Mint in a different location on the same NVMe drive.  This was and is how I am booting into VSIDO currently.  The Mint install uses the Ubuntu UEFI grub2 installer.  I'm seriously lazy these days and just haven't done the chroot exercise to switch Grub to this (my VSIDO goto) /dev/somewhere/blah.  All that to say this, last year when the last ISO's were being released, wasn't there an ongoing issue with this then?  A Debian thing?

I think part of this issue is the gpt partitioned disks.  Is the installer recognizing the 'gpt' partitioning if it is already 'gpt'?  Also, the same holds for the m.2 PCIe SSD's.  Probably way tmi.  Sorry.  All I know is, I have VSIDO back full time!

Nice to see some discussion going on for sure!  Hope you are all doing well...

It turns out the April 2018 do work after all .. Not sure why I came to believe they did not

To answer your questions RatMan, there are two installers failing and neither of them are written in python (though parts are)

There are two major differences now that I believe is the issue with the Kernel being the only thing different.. The types of errors we are seeing is similar to when people build a kernel and forget to put certain parameters in

This is still grasping.. right now I am building with out V-Box Guest additions installed to see if that mucked things up

The issue I originally posted about couldn't (or shouldn't)  be related to gparted because the installer isn't even getting to the drive configuration page. It just stalls out......
Beyond this issue, the only way I've been able to install on any m.2 (both sata and nvme) is to load vsido to ram, configure the drives with gparted and tell the installer not to format.

The inability to install on an m.2 drive is not a new issue.

^ I believe that is the same thing RatMan said on several occasions.. I am confused and it is most like due to lack of sleep and crossposting to the wrong thread..

In your situation, you never even make it to the Manual partition page, do you get to the page to fill user setup and PW's?

I apologize to you Luke for assuming you were having the same issues I was.. it is completely different and I see that now

I'm King of cross posting. Shit I can't even stay in the same subject when talking in person  :D
We kinda went off topic about m.2 drives and while that's an issue it's actually separate and easily worked around.

No apology necessary! It's a confusing issue and I'm just glad to be able to help figure it out.

Yeah, I fill out the user info and password but the next window never loads.

Message me when you get time. I've got stuff for you
