General Support / Re: Failed to mount "Audio Disc"

Partial success -

Made a second attempt at compiling mplayer2 from source - git repository.

MPlayer2 sets a real high bar when it comes to Dependency Hell. The configure failed about 4-5 times before I had all the dependencies installed.

The Good - mplayer2 will now play audio cd's from the command line, and vlc will now play audio cd.

The Bad - umplayer still does not play audio cds

The Ugly - I'm thinking umplayer may need to be compiled with audio cd support.

This is an interesting thread -

http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,10396.0.html

Umplayer is a front end for mplayer correct? Is the debian sid version of mplayer packaged with audio cd support?

Edit - followed the instructions in the tinycore thread and installed cdparanoia, some other deps and then compiled mplayer2 from source; still no-go for playing audio cd's.

What is the CD you're trying to mount? Is it something you burned yourself so there mp3 files on it, or is this an older store bought CD? On an older CD, I don't think there is recognizable file system so it will not be mountable, but it should play.

I'm getting the same behavior in umplayer on my debian testing system - will not play audio CD, only movies. Installed xine-ui and xine handles audio CD.

Edit - Correction, my CD from 1993 (The Buffalo Skinners by Big Country) has .wav files and can be mounted. Learned something today - too bad it wasn't a solution to this issue.

I just recreated part of the issue.

umplayer will not play an audio CD - but will play a movie.

I installed xine-ui, xine plays the audio CD's. Seems to take a bit longer than usual to load, but that might just be my laptop.

When I get similar errors, it is because a symlink to the actual CD drive didn't get created.

My optical drive is sr0 and umplayer (mplayer etc ) looks for the symlink /dev/cdrom to play audio. Check the settings in umplayer and make sure it is looking for a symlink that exists, or create the one it is looking for.

UEFI - cool.

I'll have to boot it up on my kids laptop. I keep debating swapping laptops with her.

My brother found that on the internet for me because I have come full circle in a way -

We are moving back to the town where I spent a couple years as a kid; it was/is in a Cold War Red Zone for first strike attack. Our house actually had a bomb shelter in it that my brother converted to a bedroom. That same document was taped to the inside of the door.

I'll have to play Waters' Amused to Death on my drive out there.

I never use it and less gnome is better since it's not an included DE.

Maybe add an apt HowTo to the HowTo thread with a bunch of the basic commands to use to accomplish the same goals?

version 1.6.0-3

on a side note, I may have made my official conversion to spacefm - I know you're a big fan, but I always stayed with thunar. The built-in auto mounting of drives in spacefm is awesome though. Simplifies the .xinitrc.

General Support / lightdm keyboard issues
August 28, 2013, 01:53:25 PM
Ever since there was a lightdm update a while back, I have been having issues with the keyboard (HP laptop) - I can enter the user name, but when changing fields to enter the password, there is no input from the keyboard. There seems to be some issues with the drop down menus - change wm's etc ... so maybe some issues with the cordless mouse.

Anyone else having these issues?

Finally got fed up with it and switched to a run level that does not start lightdm. Currently using:

xinit <window manager of choise>

to log in to X. Good news is that memory use has dropped from around 150MB idling to 110MB idling - so maybe a memory issue with lightdm as well.
