@gordon -

for your libreoffice docs also check:

1. the ownership
2. in addition to the docs having read-write permission, make sure they are saved to a folder that your username has permissions to rw.

Good deal.

And just an FYI - if anyone wants to stay with dunst for notifications, it can be configured so you're not stuck with that white on blue theme - the default configuration file is $HOME/.config/dunst/dunstrc

There is an example in /usr/share/doc/dunst

No problem.

Actually, dunst will work with any window manager, it just gets installed as a dependency when i3 is installed via apt. I get notifications like lwfitz is seeing on debian testing after installing i3. I'm just trying to narrow it down to something simple like lwfitz has dunst installed and you do not.

@statmonkey, @lwfitz - when did you last install?

lwfitz - it looks like your on screen messages are being controlled by dunst (http://www.knopwob.org/dunst/) it's pulled in as a dependency by i3 - which is now part of the new builds, correct? - you also getting those bland messages for notifications from your email (assuming your using something like thunderbird, not mutt)?

You may just need to reconfigure the notify daemon to use.

xfburn is pretty reliable.

There is also a cdw - it's an ncurses interface like ceni.

@cobaltwolfe

Did the long boot times start after you installed and used wicd? If so, I've had this problem in the past.

You may be having a conflict in your configuration - ceni writes to the /etc/network/interfaces file, wicd uses it's own configuration files and runs in the background. When both existed, my computer would also hang at the network interface startup.

Try (as root) copying /etc/network/interfaces to /etc/network/interfaces_backup; then edit the /etc/network/interfaces file and comment out the entries for your network interfaces(s) written by ceni - leave the entry for the loopback (lo) interface.

After that, see if you boot normally.

^ that is pretty good - and that final comment at the prompt is kind of funny when you realize what i3 means in ascii-art  ???

No real changes - I just liked the photo from the LA Times Photos of the Week:
