General Support / VSIDO Installer Question
March 13, 2019, 10:34:58 PM
I built a new machine and decided to do a fresh install and ran into a weird issue.

New machine specs:

Asus z390m motherboard
Intel i9 9900k cpu
Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card
64GB DDR4 ( corsair vengeance 2400) Ram
Storage: 250gb m.2 nvme (Adata XPG), 250gb m.2 sata (Sandisk), 2 1tb Patriot SSD's (raid0) and a 4tb seagate drive.

I was getting a weird kernel panic at first but updating fixed that I think.

The issue I had was that when the installer started checking for drives to configure it seemed to stall out but wasn't actually frozen because it responded when I closed the installer.
Disconnecting the two patriot ssd's allowed the installer to find the drives and my install only took a few seconds once I got passed there.

Any ideas what would cause the installer to stall out like that? Doesn't seem to be hardware related as it's all new (except the sandisk sata m.2) and I don't get any errors other than that.

General Support / Re: Install Issue (NVME SSD) **SOLVED**

I know Jedi did but for the life of me I couldn't find any posts regarding it.

The installer had problems formatting and partitioning the NVME drive. I had to do it in gparted then come back to the installer. After I got installed I still couldn't boot and had to go back in and fix grub.

General Support / Install Issue (NVME SSD) **SOLVED**

Edit:
I'm not completely sure why the install worked this time but it did...... Anyway, Im back up and running.

It's been one hell of a year but regardless of my lack of posting I really am still around. Thanks to everyone who for their great info!

I recently built a new machine and am having one hell of a time getting installed on it.  Everything runs fine but no matter what I do the installer crashes.

New config:
Board: ASUS Prime H370M-Plus
CPU: i3-8350K
RAM: 32GB DDR4 (2400Mhz)
Storage: 250GB  XPG Gammix S10 NVME M.2 SSD / 4TB Storage Drive
Graphics: nVidia GTX 660 (getting replaced with a GTX 1070 when it arrives)
Power: 500 Watt Corsair

I've tried downloading multiple times and created my install usb using DD, Rufus (winblows) and Mac disc utility.
The usb boots up with no issues, recognizes the drive and starts to install but then once the files start copying it crashes.
I have used the usb to install to other drives and used the same usb to  run a net install of Debian testing (then upgraded to SID) on the drive I wanted with no issues at all (both MBR and EFI).
When I tried to check the install log for errors the log doesn't seem to actually exist.

My belief is that it has to do with the NVME drive ad it installs fine to a standard drive (both mechanical and ssd).

Any idea's?

Fresh install after a canon print driver install  uninstalled like 250 packages. Thats what I get for hitting Y without paying attention

Thank you all for the quick response!

Yeah I tested multiple servers, and it wasn't just the speed test that was off. It was noticable as soon as I let that laptop connect to the network.

Jed might be right that it was mate related but I can't confirm.

I reinstalled and everything works fine again.

I'm marking as solved but I don't know exactly what caused it

No bandwidth clause as Google is not my ISP but just the maker of my router.

I have tried only having that laptop on the network and nothing else and it still slows to an unusable speed.

What I just did was I booted to a vsido USB and configured my network and had zero slow down with the laptop connected. So obviously there is something going on with the network configuration on the installed version.

I'm the process of reinstalling......

Will update in 2 min 😎

Ok, heres a weird one (at least I think so).....

I have a modem which is connected to a Google WiFi mesh system and multiple devices that are regularly connected with no issue at all.
A while ago I started noticing at night my network would become unstable and disconnect or become so slow that it wasn't usable but then the next morning when I jumped on my desktop everything would be fine.

So I started troubleshooting this as if it were a network issue and I immediately got a new modem, restored and resetup Google WiFi and everything seemed fine until that evening when I had the same problem.

This morning I figured out the common denominator and it's neither my modem or my router but rather my laptop that is running VSIDO with both Fluxbox and Mate.

When I connect my laptop to the network:

Desktop

Laptop

And when I disconnect my laptop I test again and it immediately jumps back up to normal speeds:

Dektop

In fact, i just ran a speed test and in the middle of testing I disconnected my laptop and the test jumped from 2mbps download to 400+.........

So obviously the laptop is the cause, but why?

There is no torrent program running to suck up bandwidth or anything, no duplicate IP address's, I've switched from open DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to using the router and made sure I didnt have duplicate host names.

I dont really have anything on the computer so I am currently going to try and reinstall to see if that fixes anything but I am at a bit of a loss

hi lwfitz
If [a young person like you] likes Muddy Waters, then you will appreciate how special it was for me to shake hands with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee; in your area,, The Lighthouse at Hermosa Pier (Ave.)  I gave to Sonny Terry a harmonica. silly me.  I asked him why did he play the harmonica upside-down?  Mr. Terry said, "I just always did it that way."

Hey there!
Thats pretty cool! I was just on a job and my customer was listening to Sonny Terry.
Spectacular musician!

QuoteThanks lwfitz! :)
Another of my many favourites!

You're very welcome buddy!  Glad someone else enjoys it like I do........
