I've Got a Life / Some pics taken at or around my house
February 18, 2014, 09:19:35 PM
I live in Northern Maine, in the great North Maine Woods!  A very beautiful part of Maine folks here refer to as The County.  People in Central and Southern Maine, call this area "The Other Maine".
In spare time, when "I've Got a Life", I love to take pic's.  I'm not the best at it, and having a very nice DSLR (Nikon with about a dozen different lenses) makes it real easy to get some good shots once in a while.
I'll post some of the ones I've taken over the last 4 or 5 years, up to today, for you to get a chuckle out of!

Shrooms?

Not having troubles per se, but was wondering if someone smarter than me could point me to the file to fix this;

jed@vsido U=jed P=local S=294

My hostname is jedsdesk on my VSIDO install.  /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname both reflect that correctly...  However, I've had to reinstall 'exim4' in order to get the internal mail working.  This was the error just prior to re-installing 'exim4'.

Feedback & Suggestions / Linux writers wanted!
November 15, 2013, 03:22:03 PM
Hey everyone!  If there are any of you interested in writing anything to do with Linux and allowing me to post it on jedsdesk.com I would be humbly grateful.  Anything from why you use it, to how to use something in particular.  Tips and tricks, Howto's, anything to point people to VSIDO, or just Linux in general.  Anything to pull in new Linux users.
I am trying to be more dedicated in my posting there, and it is paying off in site visits!  If your interested, let me know and I can set it up so you can post there whenever you feel that creative urge kicking in.
Of course anything posted there about VSIDO is also welcome to be posted here as well.  Just trying to get the good word out about VSIDO and Linux!
Thanks...

VSIDO Discussions / Netflix on VSIDO
October 22, 2013, 09:26:39 PM
Nahhhh...
I had to install Win XP in a VM, then update IE.  I tried first by installing Mac OS X Mountain Lion.  Very poor results, the video and sound was choppy no matter what.  With Win XP, that resolves the choppiness!  Now I can watch TV again on VSIDO!  Eureka!

I've Got a Life / Hard at it...
October 01, 2013, 09:08:53 AM
I do have a life!  However, when I'm relaxin', the Pug and the Tuxedo cat are constant companions.  The Pug is pretty sure she is a cat.  A very confused dog to say the least.  Pug is "Olive" and the cat is "Mittens".  Olive is 5, and Mittens is 11.  (And yes, they are as fat as they look!)

Not in the shot is the Tom cat, Jingles, who is now without his 'bells' (so-to-speak), and declined the photo op...

Just as a warning to anyone with an Ubuntu Forums account.  If your username and password are the same as the one you used at Ubuntu Forums, they have had a security breach.  Anyplace where you were using the same username and password, you'll probably want to make sure to change it.  (i.e. here, email, etc.)

Ubuntu has not been up since the breach, and you can see for yourself the warning they are posting as they rebuild their forums.  http://ubuntuforums.org/announce.html

This is the direct quote from their site;
The passwords are not stored in plain text, they are stored as salted hashes. However, if you were using the same password as your Ubuntu Forums one on another service (such as email), you are strongly encouraged to change the password on the other service ASAP.

Just a heads up for those of you who may have used their forums in the past, but no longer frequent them.

General Support / Fluxbox Menu Editor
May 31, 2013, 02:10:42 AM
All of a sudden I can no longer create menu items for newly installed apps.  The latest being VirtualBox.  I've tried it a couple different ways to no avail.  Tried it under Accessories, and also under System.  Neither worked.  Help or advice appreciated!
It's not an emergency or anything as I can still manually edit the menu file...

General Support / Terminal preferences
May 30, 2013, 10:55:57 PM
Hey all.  My preference for my terminal is for it not to have the graphic and also to not be so transparent.  I find when it is that if I have other windows open underneath, I have problems seeing what I'm typing, or the output of whatever I've typed.
In the past it was easy enough to go into preferences and change this.  When I do this now, the next time teriminal starts, it is back to transparent with the graphic in the middle of the terminal screen.  Do I need to do a 'chown' somewhere or how would I fix this?
Thanks...

I've Got a Life / Kid's and Dog's
May 29, 2013, 03:49:20 AM
Went to tell my son goodnight a little while ago.  He was already zonked out, as well as our Pug, Olive!  Just had to get a picture.  This is the most spoiled Pug in the history of dog's!

Hey guys (and gals), Just a quick note to let you all know I'm very appreciative of the fact that you all allow me to write the posts about VSIDO and post them on my blog site.  :)
Over the past couple of weeks, I just wanted to say a special thank-you to one of our members/moderators, 'Falldown', for the wonderful work he did "gratis" for http://www.jedsdesk.com/ in the form of the new logo!  Thank-you Falldown for the great logo!  It really looks great!!!   ;D

VSIDO Discussions / GPT Partitions and VSIDO
April 15, 2013, 02:50:30 AM
So I've been working on this for a while now and finally got it working!  Yes indeed VSIDO will install and run on a GPT partitioned SSD or HDD.

The beauty of this is the ability to basically have an unimaginable amount of primary partitions, instead of having to deal with the 'Logical & Extended' crap of msdos partitioned drives using MBR.  It also removes the 2Tb limitation of MBR/msdos partitions.

While the GPT partitioning works fine, UEFI still needs some work.  In order for UEFI to work, you have to replace Grub2 with Grub-efi-amd64.  The issue with this is that VSIDO has Remastersys, and if you install grub-efi-amd64 it will definitely, without a doubt, "break" Remastersys as it relies on grub-common/Grub2.  (I doubt on a current install you could do this anyway)

More to come...

General Support / Blinking Cursor on logout
April 05, 2013, 02:28:28 AM
Hey all, you'll have to bear with me, as it's been a long time since I haven't relied on Bumbebee.  Installed perfect, got all the programs installed, restored /home from bu, and am enjoying it.

My resolution says it's at 1920x1080.  However it looks like, when I open things like 'Terminal', that it's more like 1024x768.  Sorry I don't really know how to even explain it.  Makes it hard to ask for help!  Here's what it looks like for a better explanation.  A pic is worth a thousand words right?  The second pic is what it looked like when I used Bumblebee.  On the right in the top pic you can see the conky which I haven't changed, used to fit perfectly, is now acting like i tweaked it for a different size resolution.  Can this be fixed?

So as you can see, quite a difference, and the fonts in the window bar are too big to fit.  I must have done something wrong, and I've not been able to fix it.  (is it even broke?)  Graphics are way better with a dedicated card!!!

Also when I logout, it just goes to a blinking cursor.  I can ctrl-alt-F1-6 and get to tty and login, however it errors out if I try to "startx" and ctrl-alt-F7 is just a blinking cursor of course.  Video card is an Nvidia GTX 660M with 2Gb GDDR5.  Installed driver version is 313.30 current.  I'm currently on Kernel 3.8-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.8.5-1~experimental.1 x86_64.  Below is 'inxi -F'.  More info on request...
