Feedback & Suggestions / Re: polls
February 06, 2013, 03:23:39 PM
i still think it's madness not to have polls.  polls can be abused, and turn ugly, just as threads can.  and you know what we do then?  we close it.  no biggie.  i mean, we're not going to suggest we get rid of the thread making ability because they sometimes turn a bit degenerative, are we?

Feedback & Suggestions / quick search bar in synaptic
February 06, 2013, 03:19:12 PM
vsido could do with apt-xapian-index for synaptic.

at least that's my view on it.

save those of us who like to use it from having to sudo apt-get install apt-xapian-index && sudo update-apt-xapian-index... and having to find out that's what we need to do to restore it.  ^_^

synaptic just feels funny without it.

what say ye?

also, just noticed... i have been able to run things as root in x before... i have spacefm open still.  but can no longer start another instance of spacefm as root.  definately done something bad...

~(ah, found the modify button.  was looking along the bottom of a post for an edit button before.)~

export DISPLAY=:0.0
also failed to remedy

~~~~~
a few other things tried n failed...
but now, seems like i have a clue to work from:xauth list $DISPLAY returns nothing.  it should return something like somehost.somedomain:10 mit-magic-cookie-1 4d22408a71a55b41ccd1657d377923ae according to that thread on lq
last post suggested xauth $DISPLAYwhich just gavexauth: (argv):1:  unknown command ":0.0" which gave me the idea of trying just xauth listwithout the trailing "$DISPLAY" as first suggested, and there i got something that looked more like useful output:levinrahn/unix:0  MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1  b14aff4blah7537ablah74dcblahd0be which i am now about to attempt to feed in, into the correct place, after having written all this to keep the progress report in this thread up to date...
...and...
upon closer reading of that post suggesting "xauth list $DISPLAY" i think maybe they didnt mean to add the $DISPLAY, from how they word it in the brackets which i must have skimmed past too carelessly on first read.
that "levinrahn/unix" concerns me for a couple reasons, before i hit enter on xauth add levinrahn/unix:0  MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1  b14aff4blah7537ablah74dcblahd0be
that's not my host anymore.
it was a typo on installation that i thought i'd fixed post instalation.  levinrahn -> levinrhan.  seems this may be the source of my woes.
so i change it toxauth add levinrhan/unix:0  MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1  b14aff4blah7537ablah74dcblahd0beand pray that it saying unix like that there ((weird)), is a non-issue...
...and...
...hits enter...
...no errors in terminal...
...jumps to the menu to attempt to launch something as root...
...sees synaptic show up...
...smiles, and goes off to mark this shit solved, and congratulates himself for learning something through troubleshooting.
isnt gnu adorable like that?  :)
[edit] the short story:  had made typo on install, and had an "ah" instead of a "ha" in my computers name.  had renamed it in host file, but xauth still needed to be told.  so i told it, n now it's fixed.  fin.[/edit]
(synaptic:5597): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
^is the error i get any time i attempt to launch synaptic in a terminal, whether as root, using sudo, or gksu.
tried telling it to use displays 1-3 too, same result, different number.
in desperation i even tried un-installing and re-installing it.
running it from gmrun, with gksu, it takes me to the message box informing me it will launch without asking for root perms, but when i close that, instead of seeing synaptic, i get nothing.  same result with launching it from the desktop menu's "root" menu.
htop shows it is not running.
same story with gparted.
what have i done?  :O
fairly sure i had run gparted at some point earlier...  or maybe that was just in the live system.
this is on the debian sid version of vsido... release before last, i think.
Linux levinrhan 3.7-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.7.1-1~experimental.2 x86_64 GNU/Linux
^ that one.  er... tho, that's after an upgrade or two... meh, should still be same kernel, i dont recall rebooting or switching to new kernel.
really would prefer not giving up on vsido... but inability to run synaptic, is a deal breaker.   getting the info i need from apt get/cache is just too clumsy in some cases.
ps, tips from here [ http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=23975 ] failed to remedy the problem for me.
P.S.  Learned a valuable lesson in writing this post.  First write the post in Geany, then post it to forum.  Otherwise the dang forum expires the session and loses all you just wrote.  Grrrr.  :'(
in every forum, repeat the mantra:
before every post, ctrl a, ctrl c.
before every send, ctrl a, ctrl c.
before every submit, ctrl a, ctrl c.
before every reply, ctrl a, ctrl c.
ctrl a, ctrl c.
ctrl a, ctrl c.
now the vsido fun can start.  eth1.  ayurvedic geeking majoris is outta the way, still got a load of crap piled up in my main computer's chair, but that will gradually change as the vsido funs start increasing.  update, upgrade, 104 mb to be got, and a quick glance at the list makes me weap for what i'm doing to that machine... it's gotten used to a refined "just what you need", minimal gentoo system.   seeing radeon fly by there, makes me realise i've just given famous grouse & coke to one who is used to >20 year old single malts.
to me polls are an awesome bit of fun, and sometimes telling, sometimes not.  who knows what thousands of reasons users might have to make a poll.  i really like graphs depicting things, even simple bar graphs.  i'm a geek, it goes with the teritory to like graphing things.  so why not graph community perception too.  we're not stupid, we know to take the results with the apropriate measures of fault tollerence taken into account.  they're not absolute arbriter of decision, in that they're corruptable, and popular choice isnt always best choice, but they're still nice to have.  if anything i think they just make great talking points, something that fires of some diologue, or development path.  i'm sorry you've had bad experiences with polls in the past, but to me the question isnt of putting a case for why we should be, to me it just should be.  as in, what the heck reason is there to not have a poll feature.  just a bit of harmless fun, that can sometimes yeild some useful info.  look around, see who's in the comunity... what's the worst that could happen?  trust us that little?  ;D  hehe.
go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on.   ^_^  pweeeeease can i haz poll... i pwomise to stop using lolcat speak, and replacing "l"s with "w"s...  please....   %,%
 :D
freedom, eased with a dash o democratic polling, aye....  justa see lay of land, n feel of general comunity vibe (of poll answering portion of forum visiting community at least), so lets not let it be taken as hard gospel.   if it turns out the majority of poll-answering, forum-visitors, are britney spears fans, and want her a default in all vsido releases from now on, then surely good sence and taste would prevail...  but hey, does this forumware have an inbuilt feature, or a plugin?
who wants polls, vote yes.  who isnt bothered, vote not bothered.  who votes against polls, vote no.  if none of these choices are accurate enough to how you want to vote, vote other.
WM Designs and Discussions / Re: i3 (tiling WM)
mmmmmm mmm mmMMMmm!
* rolls around in i3's niceness *
mmm *lick lick*  nice wm!
i3 is an inspiration.  no, literally, it inspires me.  i've taken many cues from it for my "tabular boonad", and still have many more ideas from i3 i'd like to implement yet.
had the arch version of rowan witch happily sat on the (scrotwm) desktop, with the tilda terminal and htop open... 24mb.   someone once said they saw 19mb.  i had the scrot of at least 25mb iirc.  ... but i dont have it anymore (not that i know of, havnt looked)...  so i suppose that didnt happen, and i'll be quiet now.
... but do check out scrotwm.  it's a lovely lightweight tiling wm, easy to configure for basic stuff you're likely to need, no weird "you must recompile to configure" suckless-philosophy (as in dwm) and no "you must start fathoming haskell and hackagedb and xmonad's library to reconfigure" (as in xmonad, obviously).
i imagine "sscrotwm" will be even lighter than "spectrwm".
(no that wa not a typo, two "s", the extra one for shrivled)
and.. what say ye of tinywm...  is there tinier?  but does it still have a tiny footprint while running.
...bet i've seen though, not just wm, but the whole system of course, was rat gentoo.  how does 10mb apeal to you?  with some lighter choices, i bet that could be even less.  :)
but when you get to that level, you are making decisions and compromises too far into loss of features.   i prefer to think in terms of features to footprint ratio, rather than just a bottom line number for the footprint, with no awareness of features.  ...  otherwise, we'd just not run a computer at all!  "look!  zero mb!"  ;D
nice thread.   will keep an eye out for anyone dropping past with some great tip, or new ultra-light wm, or some old revisited obscure wm we never gave the time.
"xmonad is not just a window manager.  it a also a library from which to make your own wm."
and with that, came Tabular Boonad.
hastey start to this thread.  may return to spruce up first post later.
