May be i'm missing something obvious ... :oops:

I cannot install plugins to spacefm. When i try to do so i'm prompted by the following error msg:

sudo: Could not initialize plugin rules

(translating from not- english error msg here; so sorry if it's not 100% exact)

It's all about this. All this systemd & related hassle has only one goal, create some kind of (RH) monpoly starting from the linux world - and make the foss developers work, in the end, for free for the profits of RH (very similar to how Mac OS started from BSD).

So, i wouldn't say, it's a *WRON* attitude. Rather, it is a *LOGICAL* attitude of a profit oriented company trying to transform as much as possible of the foss efforts to their private profits.  All FOSS oriented linux distros should have abbandoned gnome since a long time (like slackware e.g. did). In the end, the RH bullies probably will be successful, it's sad but it's working that way. The confort is: When it comes to compare closed systems, windows or macos are far superior to gnome. In the linux world the desktop environment probably is the minor important part, compared to server installations and i doubt that systemd is an improvement for server setups. Ok, i finish here ... Sorry.

I'm trying out both in parallel, and i'm unsure which of them would be the better choice. Spacefm in any case seems better (and easier) for customization, pcmanfm is more closely indentated with some freedesktop aspects, seems ... And then, udevil is a great feature of spacefm, especially if ypu prefer to not depend on systemd & cie.

Given you try to make a *box based desktop, for sure you can opt for the crunchbang style (no icons on the desktop, filemanagement as a separate application, which makes it a deliberate decision which filemanager you use. Also xfe would be ok - and effectively it is ). But if you'd like a desktop management, i'd be interested to know if and how spacefm could be tweaked to do that a bit better ...

Sure. But on the desktop there are only the icons of the stuff which sits in $HOME/Desktop. I'd be interested if - and in case, how - it is possible to teach spacefm to draw on the desktop also the icons for trash and for mounted volumes (devices) ....

Is there a way to set spacefm to draw icons on the desktop (e.g, trash, devices, home etc; like in pcmanfm)? At a first glance i do not see any such option .... (?)

Glad once out of hundred, i could be a bit useful.  In any case, gtk3 is a mess ... :-( :-(

Personally, i try to stay as close as possible with gtk2 (OTOH, i really do not have any experience with qt4 or 5; once, when i played a bit around with lxqt i was not so affascinated, but ... )

Answering to myself i found this:

pcmanfm Trash:///   =  spacefm ~/.local/share/Trash/files
pcmanfm computer:///  =  spacefm / /media/   (given you have ticked "Show Devices" - is that by default?)
pcmanfm menu://applications/  = spacefm ; xdotool key super+F1 (1)

1) This presumes that you have set in your box (jwm here in my case) mask 4 (mod4 for fluxbox) + F1 for the root menu. And of course, xdotool has to be installed.

But then, the simplest way would be to call an xdotool command which starts the right click menu (of *box) ... (like described here:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/tint2 (Applications menu in Openbox)

To explain: When you're calling pcmanfm in the way i posted above, it will open either the lxde xdg menu, or the Trash or Devices - within the filemanager obviously. That's a pretty nice feature which turns handy when you're configuring some internal menu in your windowmanager (like fluxbox or jwm).

Since i was pointed recently to the capability of spacefm to live without udev & systemd (i'm running debian/devuan with openrc), it would be nice to substitute pcmanfm by spacefm. And it would be even nicer if this was possible without any losses

I don't know, if i got all right, but the starting problem for sure is a a gtk3 one (the same happens for many themes manjaro comunity driven edition used to use). Though, one the which seems to handle that problem fine seems to be vertex, which can be found here: https://github.com/horst3180/vertex-theme

Is there in spacefm an equivalent to the following commands of pcmanfm:

- `pcmanfm menu://applications`
- `pcmanfm computer:///`
- `pcmanfm Trash:///`

At a first glance i don't see it, but i'm not so familiar with spacefm (which in theory i'd prefer because of its capability to run efficiently without systemd and udev). So, very likely,  i've overseen something.
