How To's / Scrot - the way you want it.
April 06, 2013, 06:00:25 PM
I recently took three screenshots of a screenshot downloading; when it started, in the middle and when it ended and looked at them:

  • 2013-04-06--1365263953_1920x1080_scrot.png
  • 2013-04-06--1365264079_1920x1080_scrot.png
  • 2013-04-06--1365264093_1920x1080_scrot.png

And it struck me - what the hell are those 136526**** numbers.  Looking at scrots manpage I see it's the size of the image in "bytes" do I really need that?

Quote$f image path/filename (ignored when used in the filename)
$n image name (ignored when used in the filename)
$s image size (bytes) (ignored when used in the filename)
           $p image pixel size
           $w image width
           $h image height
           $t image format
           $$ prints a literal '$'
\n prints a newline (ignored when used in the filename)

In my OpenBox menu for "Now" I use scrot like this:
    scrot '%Y-%m-%d--%s_$wx$h_scrot.png' -e 'mv $f ~/images/ & gthumb ~/images/$f'

    and again the manpage:
QuoteCharacters preceded by a '%' are interpretted by strftime(2).

    AHA!

%Y-%m-%d can be reduced to %F
    and then add:
    %T = HH:MM:SS

I like that better ... $hx$w is good then end with _Sector11.png and I have:
    %F_%T_$wx$h_Sector11.png

    and I get:
    2013-04-06_14:46:28_1920x1080_Sector11.png

    Much better:  date-time-size-and by who:
  • 2013-04-06_14:52:27_1920x1080_Sector11.png
  • 2013-04-06_14:52:48_1920x1080_Sector11.png
  • 2013-04-06_14:54:29_1920x1080_Sector11.png

    OK, that's an opinion.

strftime info attached as a text file for reference.

Anyone else having a problem with the "Pick a Search Engine" in Iceweasel?

The manage tool isn't working either:

Only thing that works is in the main area - and it defaults to Google!

If this is a new feature for FireFox (Iceweasel) I'll kiss it goodby.

Starting today Iceweasel isn't letting me choose a search engine:

"Search or Enter Address" takes me directly to Google - Do not use Yahoo, do not use Duck-Duck-Go, do not collect $200.

If this becomes the norm it will be

Iceweasel:
Go directly to Jail, do not pass GOogle, do not collect $200.

Seriously - anyone else notice this?

Disk Distaster Averted

This works if you are not interested in rescuing the files
just making the device useable again.

OH OH!  I was multi-tasking just like the computer doing two things at once, I had dd'd a USB with VSIDO_LiveCD finished that and plugged in my Ext HDD (250GB) and popped in a fresh usb stick hit the up arrow in a terminal for:
sudo dd if=vsido_v1-2_3.7-1_Kernel.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M; sync
and blink ... it was done.

??? that was fast ... only to find out I had just dd'd my 250GB backup HDD to a 600+MB VSIDO_LiveCD.

OH CRAP!

What to do what to do what to do... I spent a bit more than a day with Google scouring the net looking to recover the drive:

Google: recover partition after dd -windows

And I am not geek enough to understand some of the answers say except for: "Stop writing to the disk"  DUH - I ain't that dumb but I remember a time when I wish I had read that first (Win 95 days)

I saw where a guy said; "I have another identical drive so I dd'd that over it and I'm testing recovery techniques."  Must be nice to have the equipment - but it got me thinking: I have 2 x 250GB HDD's  My Int and my Ext HDD's are both 250GB ...
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

The info on the Ext HDD is only rsync copies of my

Int HDD  =|= Ext HDD
/media/5 =|= /M5
/home    =|= /S11-Jan
/home    =|= /S11-Feb

And these (not copies):

=|= /Wallpapers - my 3000 wallpapers - no loss I kept my best 900, and the net has the rest - someplace. I'm  8) with that.
=|= /MarkBuck --> all his python apps (I can get those again at ConkyCompanions PPA) no loss.

NOTE: First time my backup bash file is used in a month it creates a new month and after a few months I delete all the old ones except for the previous month.

My Int HDD:
Disk /dev/sda: 30401 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Warning: extended partition does not start at a cylinder boundary.
DOS and Linux will interpret the contents differently.
Units = sectors of 512 bytes, counting from 0

Device Boot       Start       End   #sectors  Id  System
/dev/sda1          2048  31457279   31455232  83  Linux

/dev/sda7     456011776 488396799   32385024  83  Linux

Since my Ext HDD is now a paperweight as everything I read says if I try to "recover" stuff (not really interested in this) I'll NOT get back the first 600+MB that VSIDO is using I was thinking this: How To Do Eveything With DD

This part in particular:

QuoteCloning an entire hard disk:

dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb conv=notrunc,noerror

In this example, sda is the source. sdb is the target. Do not reverse
the intended source and target. Surprisingly many people do. notrunc
means to not truncate. noerror means to keep going if there is an
error. Normally dd stops at any error, if you have a question about a
hard drive on whether or not it works, you can try to use it as the
source drive for the dd command. You should get an error if it is not
working. target drives need to be really messed up to give an error in
dd.

That should put the seven partitions on my Ext HDD and then I can go in with gparted and delete all the partitions and reformat the HDD as one partition with ext4 and start over with a new backup.

In theory that works, but it took four hours (slow computer) for me to understand that while that was the right thing to do ... there was still more hair pulling coming.

76GB?  Oops!

But it looked good the 7 partitions were there, except for the final 2 partitions (VSIDO test / and /home (with fluxbox))  the final partition had errors and I could not dismount the first  partition.

Booted with VSIDO USB and ran gparted to delete all partitions and last night after deleting: sdb7, sdb6, sdb5, sdb4, sdb3 & sdb2 I was stuck with that {mumbling} sdb1 that was root and was always "... in use by another file system"

Now what?  Hellooooooooooo Google ... and found:

sudo mkfs.ext3 -m 1 /dev/sdb1

That ^ got rid of the / partition.
I killed that sucker!  RIP!  Well OK mkfs.ext3 -m /dev/sdb1 did for me, but I got to push the button!

gparted then deleted sdb1 and formatted the whole thing as ext4!

Needless to say I am not a happy camper.

I just reformatted this drive earlier this month to install the latest (at that time) VSIDO ISO.

I was checking because I have problems with my external USB HDD as well (not related). So there is no way to use that to backup at the moment.

How worried do I have to be?  I have "never" seen this warning before.

Can I 'fix' this in a relatively safe way?

General Support / Change Label name on dd's USb device
February 26, 2013, 10:35:54 PM
I need some help.

Conky's ${fs_size} doesn't like label names with spaces. and when one uses "dd" to get the ISO onto a USB device it has the label name: VSIDO LiveCD

Bummer,
  1. it's not a CD and
  2. I can't figure out how to change the label name.

Anyone know how I can change the Label on a DD'd USB?

Until then the last part doesn't work  :-[
PS: It would be really nice if future ISO's used VSIDO_Live

General Support / Mice cursors
February 20, 2013, 04:36:47 PM
OK, I am being haunted by an old problem.

Debian and it's love of "Xcursors" - it's a take it or leave attitude.  What happened to Linux - Freedom of Choice?

OK, rant over - I'm obviously missing something here.

When I was using Ubuntu I found a mouse cursor my wife loves - Marbre.

Marbre Mouse Cursor

It's included in VSIDO.  Everything was fine as I was using the Net-Install version of VSIDO up until recently.  I had managed to save that pointer through Xubu, all versions of #!, but it too a lot of help (see below) to get it to work in #!, and it worked with the Net-Install scripts that VastOne made.

However since I installed the "2013-02-13" VSIDO build I cannot get 'Marbre' to work properly.  It works over OpenBox and inside 'most' program windows, but on the desktop - NADA!
Iceweasel & desktop

a composite image

I have tried everything I can find over at #!, on the Debian Forums (all they talk about are DMZ-White and DMZ-Black) and lot's of links in Google.  I hate those DMZ things,  I just  deleted them, I'm using 'crystalcursors' at the moment.

These don't help:
[Solved] Can't find Mouse Cursor
[Solved] How does one install a mouse cursor in #!?
[Solved] Change Mouse Cursor (OpenBox )

And just so you know, I slipped over to an XFCE4 session and I can't get it working their either.

Any help getting this pointer working would be greatly appreciated.

How To's / How To: Change the Default Locale
February 11, 2013, 10:02:45 PM
I found out quite by accident that VSIDO keeps the:

en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

setting even though I told the installer to use

en_CA.UTF-8 UTF-8

So I went looking for a way to get my choice as the default.

It was a lot easier than I though:

Configuring Locales - gave me what I needed.
Debian wiki - Locale - Interesting reading as well

All packages needed for this are installed in VSIDO by default (I believe, I've been wrong before).

Start with:
sector11 @ sector11
11 Feb 13 | 18:07:41 ~
         $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
password for sector11:

First A Word of CAUTION: what you select below are the "locales" that will remain active in your system.

Using the bash alias "up" to update / dist-upgrade your system that 'removes' any locales that newly updated / installed programs may drag into your system will be removed.  This is where I saw that my 'en_CA.UTF-8' locale was being removed.

Hey, that's my locale, I want it!  ;)

So to continue: put an '*' in the locales you want to keep, you can choose multiple. And remove the '*' from locales you do not wish to have on your system.

Feedback & Suggestions / [Solved] Forum Fonts
January 15, 2013, 09:04:14 PM
OK I have a font size or two to pick on.

QuoteWhen we quote something it looks like the small print of a Life Insurance Policy advising us of bad things they don't want us to know.

During the normal course of reading a thread the font its just fine.

Now we come to   answering a post or creating one, and my wife can read the text from the other side of the living room and if "code is added" I'm not sure what starts and ends where.

Is there something in the software that will allow a user to pick sizes of the fonts for:
a. Quotes
b. Posts
c. Editor

If not is there a chance of getting:
1. quoted text a bit bigger, and
2. the editor text a bit smaller

================
I also notice unless I open my browser almost the full width of the screen I get this left <--> right movement again.

Am I the only 17" monitor here?

I have a couple of hours before I have to run ... soooooo!!!
Some can be re-sized quite nicely I think.

My compliments to falldown for the great banner!

Or use https://www.tineye.com/ with the clean ones to see if they can be found in different sizes - right now I don't have the time.  Busy day ahead!

Almost forgot the original one I made:

Please Note:  None of these wallpapers are mine.  I found them on the web.

Conky / Conky Tips and Tricks

Teo's Scripts in a nutshell

Teo's scripts use 4 different weather sites

Some for USA users, others for International Users

Accuweather's pages are different for US and International users.  Which strikes me as halarious because for me The USA has always held "International" status.  Yea yea, I know Accuweather is a US site!

However, to continue

1a)Accuweather - INTERNATIONAL USERS -  conditions: font
1a)Accuweather - ALL USERS -  conditions: font
  • Now
  • Today forecast
  • Tonight forecast
  • 9 extra days

1b)Accuweather - USA USERS - conditions: font defunct
  • Today
  • Tomorrow
  • 3 extra days

1c)Accuweather RSS - All users - conditions: font
  • Current
  • Today's forecast (by date)
  • Tomorrow's Forecast (by date)

    1d1)Accuweather - Images - INTERNATIONAL USERS - conditions: images
  • Now
  • Today Forecast
  • Tonight Forecast
  • 9 extra days

    1d1.1)Accuweather - Images - INTERNATIONAL USERS_Hourly_Forecast
  • Weather for the next 16 hours

    1d2)Accuweather - ConkyWeather font - INTERNATIONAL USERS
  • Now
  • Today Forecast
  • Tonight Forecast
  • 9 extra days
  • The difference between 1a) and 1d2) - 1a has a "C" version (language) - apparently faster - I have not tried it.

    1e)Accuweather - Images - USA USERS
  • Now
  • Today Forecast
  • Tonight Forecast
  • 9 extra days

2)WUnderground ICAL - International users - conditions: font
  • day - night forecasts for 7 days

NWS XML - USA users - NOAA Weather Service - conditions: images (Opinion alert: YUK on those images)
  • day - night forecasts for 7 days

Weather.com conky script - all users - conditions: images
  • Now
  • Today's FULL forecast
  • Tonight's FULL forecast
  • 10 extra days
  • has a C version of the scripts included.

The differences in images between Accuweather and Weather·com
  • Accuweather uses rectangular images - a little more difficult to "space" them[/*]
  • Weather·com used square images and are better looking (Opinion alert)

In the directory for each of Teo's scripts you'll see a couple of PDF files.

If you look at, for example: 1d1_Output_of_the_script.pdf you will see numbers on the left.

    1, 2, 3, 4 etc

those are the 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p etc in the conky commands:
    ↑ ${execi 600 sed -n '19p' /media/5/Conky/accuweather_conky/tod_ton}°

if you look at "tod_ton" you will see 19 is a number ... in representing the high temperature

    Sorry about that Jed ...
    I need a coffee!

Love what you are doing!!!  You and VastOne have the space for larger fonts, that makes a BIG difference.

Opinion: Since pictures speak a thousand words, I don't use text for the conditions.

    For a few reasons really:
  • Now - look at the image/font - look outside
  • Forecasts change by the hour at times, a scientifically configured guess:

  • Monday it says Rain on Friday
  • Tuesday it says Cloudy for Friday
  • Wednesday it says Sunny for Friday

  • 4 or more days away - a scientifically configured wild hunch

If every job in the world allowed for that kind of accuracy ... can you imaging the chaos!

General Support / Install /root - keep /home
January 14, 2013, 06:03:56 PM
I just tried a new install of VSIDO v1-2 here, over top of an old one.

I told the Live Installer to use:  /dev/sda - I only have the one.
  • /dev/sda1 - /root - format to ext4
  • /dev/sda2 -/home - do not format!
Worked like a champ and not even a hiccup from Dropbox - yes I had to tell it I had an account and to use the old settings, but it is there.

Next I'll burn VSIDO Liquorix ISO to a CD/DVD and install that over my OLD VSIDO "Net Install"  (sda6 & 7) preserving home just for fun.  I'll still need to SMXI it to get a liquorix update and NVIDIA going.

And saying that why have a Liquorix version if 'smxi' is still needed to update it and get video drivers?
just a thought rumbling around in my head.

I don't think I have installed 1 distro so many times before - and I've NEVER had a quad boot system before, let alone with one Distro.  All my 'dual' boot system were always 2 different Distros.

This ALPHA TEAM Member is doing what he can to break VSIDO on install - I can't.

Introductions / Second time has to be good ....
January 14, 2013, 06:01:36 PM
Name is Sector11 although I answer to S11, SR71, SR11 and sometimes to  .... naaaaaaa ... never mind.

My passion is Conky ... but I'm not addicted to it.  I can stop anytime.  In fact I have quit many times.  ;)

Regarding Linux, I'm open to almost anything and will try anything (within reason).  I keep a good backup (Opinion: I think it's good) and because I have lost nothing valuable in the 6 years of running Linux I have been known to actively try and break things, I can say this now because my wife is not looking over my shoulder.  At least since I got away from ****** that is, it seemed to crash as many times as *******.

I have one computer, a desktop, hooked into a cable modem, so I'm not portable and my wife and I share this machine.  We do not use separate accounts or sessions or log-in, whatever you call it.  We have no secrets.  So I configure my setup with her in mind and some things by her choice.

Our computer but my responsibility to maintain it.  For the last little while, installing VSIDO so many times she has gotten into the habit of asking, "Which one of these is our version?" if she boots up.  As many times as I tell her, "It's the default one dear." she still asks.  :D

OK, back to conky now ... lwfitz ... I want a #  where do I go?    :)

OH yea, one last thing before I leave.
If it's broke, I didn't do it so don't blame me.

This come from "johnraff" over on #!.  I use cbs (the original) and ubs (UBU, sit Ubu, sit) as well.

And while this forum is very young it does work.

It will get better as Google's bots roam around.  ( See, I use Google    )

vos = VsidO Search - I have it in my path (~/bin) and a simple search:

Conky / Conky Support, Codes and Screenshots
January 14, 2013, 05:56:31 PM
I do this in the form of a "screenshot thread" as well.
...
Three new VSIDO installs:
  • /dev/sda1 = M-1 - will remain "stock"
  • /dev/sda8 = M-8 - my play land
  • /dev/sda10 = M-10 - will be my working system when M-8 is right
The conky on the left comes to you because of mrpeachy's hard work with LUA.
