I've Got a Life / Re: reducing pebkac - vitamins n stuff.

Don't let the AMA/Big pharma scare you off from vitamin D.
Also RDA is not the amount to keep you healthy, but minimal survival dosage.
Remember that doctors and pharmaceutical companies make money from you being sick, so the less healthy they can keep you the more money they make.

Vast One had me at Fluxbox  ;D
Though I'm also a semi-fan of Xfce, but the way that I strip it down and configure it you might have trouble telling that it is not a WM.

That would be me, although truth to tell much of the time I was not running #! but my own Debian mix, much inspired by #! and their forum.

@Gordon,
Lazy smart people are the ones who get things done in the most efficient way.

Ubuntu is moving to systemd, since Debian has decided to;

From the Arch wiki:

As of version 1.3.6-2, SLiM can automatically detect installed desktop environments and window managers. This is achieved through the use of sessiondir /usr/share/xsessions/ in /etc/slim.conf. It will therefore be necessary for those who installed an earlier version of SLiM to amend /etc/slim.conf and ~/.xinitrc, accordingly.

SID has SLiM 1.3.4-2

Newer can be found here:

The drop-down feature is nice when your doing a lot of stuff in the terminal, you can just hit a key on the keyboard and it is gone, but still working.  Hit the key again and there it is still doing whatever it is that you had it doing.  Probably not for everyone, I had used Quake drop down terminal in the past, (long ago) and had been looking for another.  Xfce4-terminal --drop-down does a wonderful job.  It also adds a tab in the preferences to make some adjustments...
Also nice if you are using GUI and need to do a quick command i.e. kill a program that is behaving badly.
Or using something like plait or pms (poor mans spotify)

The only guhnome I like > Guake...
I love having a drop down terminal and it was like 188kb to install...

Why ?
Xfce4-terminal has drop down and is already in Vsido.

Gdebi-core can be used from the command line and resolves dependencies better than dpkg.

These may not be exactly what you are looking for, but there are a lot of dead ends in searching for them.

Xfce4-terminal,relatively light, has drop down mode (like guake and tilda) and comes with solarized color themes.
Very hard to beat.

Maybe it should come on the ISO ?

The most positive thing that I can definitely say about systemd is that it is FOSS,  from wikipedia;
systemd is published as free and open-source software under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License version 2.1 or later.

Worst case if it is chosen/used and RedHat/Gnome et-al get sticky later, it can be forked.

I use it, but am most unhappy with the gtk 3 UI, it was great with gtk 2.

If a suitable UI could be made for gdebi core without gtk 3 ?

With respect to cron being eliminated by systemd, there are systemd services that replace at least some cron functions.

Some display managers do (or did not recently) work properly with systemd, the only one that it seems the systemd devs test against is GDM3 (which depends on most of Gnome 3)

I switched from SLiM to lightdm because at the time SLiM was not being maintained and was not working, that has changed and switching back would not upset me.

I am still on the fence about systemd, I see valid arguments on both sides.
