If it's in .csv you probably will be able to import the structure but that is getting ahead of things.  I believe that what Ozi was trying to get to was how many records will you have or unique identifiers.  The size of the database, retrieval speeds, number of fields, etc. will all impact the database utility you use or your choice.  If it's a simple db with a couple of hundred clients (in this case) and four or five fields that is different than something with 300,000 clients and 100 fields.

Well that is the good thing he is well under 1k for how many clients he has.

great.  Mysql should be able to meet your needs and I would recommend that you start here:  There is a ton of information and I believe some pretty good tutorial stuff IIRC. Back in the day, I learned most of my database stuff from a Sam's book on data structures and algorithms plus the MySQL site and some forums.  I totally agree with Ozi that sketching out a structure first is pretty key but having said that reading through some of the tutorials and getting some hands on experience (or more since in sounds like you have some) is a good place to start.  If you have some specific ?'s I'll do my best to help out and in the interim I will look around and see what books I have here.  I am moving for the 3rd time in 2 years so it's a little hectic around here with things spread between two continents and 3 homes but sure I have something.
looks like a really really nifty website thank you for that it's hugely appreciated. I can also say I know what you're talking about with the moving 3 times in 2 years. just in the past year I've gone from moving back to New Hampshire from Tennessee down to Florida back up to New Hampshire.

Just a quick question.

How much data are you looking to store? This might narrow down the number of possible data stores, as some sense of scale is useful.
1 - 100,
100 - 1000,
1000 - 10,000,
100,000 - 1,000,000,
1,000,000 +

What sort of data you are wanting to store would be useful too? Medical, financial, inventory, .....

Is there a time frame to getting something work?

Just a broad starting point. :)
is her a time frame he didn't really give me a specific one so that's one good thing. and most likely it's going to be like you know customer name address to assigning a customer ID you know the financial records cause he does do payment plans with certain people so he wants to be able to record what people have paid how much the left have left a oh yeah stuff like that pretty much its it seems like it should be a pretty simple one like nothing overly extensive.

also if there are typos please forgive me I am using the speech to text on my phone at 430 in the morning.

I have sat down an spoken with him about what he is looking to get out of this and written it down. Basically right now he is using Excel(well libreoffice equivalent) spread sheets to organize everything and update everything. I personally am leaning towards MySQL as of right now but that's also because I have one of the "for dummies" books on it and it had seemed pretty good while I had access to it. (its currently in my totaled car and towing company lost key so no access to get it). I have not even begun to start planning on what it is going to end up looking like because of the fact that I really don't know much beyond the simple things. I have discussed this with him and he knows that since it is something I have to learn it is going to take awhile so time for me isn't an issue. He is basically looking to be able to do everything he can with Excel and he wants to be able to update individual customer orders and add new ones from a single form. I guess the biggest thing would be (beyond the records he is looking for) is that he would like to be able to update the information himself in the easiest possible manner.

Also on another note I do fully understand how much time and effort is going to be going into this, There was a point where the DB admin of a company was training me for his replacement because he didn't want to. Back then I found it very interesting and not terribly difficult but that was more maintaining than building.

Alright since I'm pretty sure that this requires sitting at a keyboard and also its not hardware I should put this question here.

I'm looking for suggestions on good books and websites for learning Databasing. If there is a decent program for setting one up I'm up for that as well. I am asking this because I have a friend who has asked me to help him out and create one for his landscaping company so he can have an easier time keeping track of everything.

Well I'm not sure what else to add except that thank you all in advance.

(and yes I've used google but there is so much crap out there and I've only ever played around with one a friend used for testing.)

Have you tried changing the gtk and fluxbox themes from the defaults? I sometimes have the same issue with apps other than steam (which I have never used) and it's usually resolved when I change the themes.

This was actually the first thing that i tried and nothing changed. I'm going to be re installing straight from the .deb that's from the steam website and see what happens. Every other system it was installed that way and had no issues. But shortly after my last reply i did apt-get update and and was going to remove and re install but there are indexes that refuse to download and update so wondering if that might be part of it.

Might be one of... 1. Not meeting system requirements (sure it says 1Gb, but on a 2Gb machine... I donno *shrug*) or 2. That toshibas graphicscard or lack of (not enough mem on it? Driver issues? Bit of both. Post the output of "inxi -Fz" with a question usually helps too :)

Well now thats a nifty little command. As for the Steam thing I am not attempting to run any games from it just be able to be signed in a speak with people who I only can contact through it. I know this thing will not allow gaming (me desktop will do that one)

anyway here is the output of that command and its actually interesting.

Yes my computer is named after a character from Dragonlance lol.

But on another note what I find interesting is the ram, right before I put this (Vsido) on here I checked the ram through XP and it stated that there was 1.4Gb installed. Opened the case and there is only one single ram slot and 1 stick obviously. So I had thought that there was maybe something funky going on with XP and it was a 2Gb stick (I did check the stick but its not stated on it what it is and honestly didn't look it up.
As for asking a question...
What would cause steam to appear that way? Even though this thing can't do any gaming it should be able to handle loading the UI properly.

I have never opened or installed steam, no help there... sorryz...

Adblock Plus is a default that I keep forgetting to take out....

Consider it done on the next ISO... just disable or uninstall it now

Lol alright will do. was just wondering on that one really. As for Steam issue its just interesting.

Welcome back cobaltwolfe! Those specs arent bad at all and should make for a great experiance for you and vsido.

The Pentium D is a fantastic budget cpu for socket 775 boards.  You can get them from amazon for as little as $25 (used) and they last forever.

I was actually quite thoroughly enjoying the system (After updating the Gfx to a XFX Radeon HD 7770 Ghz edition) but then the HDD decided to crap out on me. Meh once I can order a new one this thing should last a fairly decent amount of time especially for gaming with that graphics card.

Currently I'm running the Vsido X32 on a Toshiba Satellite with a P4 @ 3Ghz 2Gb Ram and a 60Gb HDD I'm only having one single issue which was put into the general section.

I'm rather glad to be back here. I loved #! but I've always been a fan of going for broke and using the unstable and testing sides of Debian. I've broken my computers more times than I can count and loved almost every minute of it as it forces me to learn more and more.

Alright so since my normal rig currently has a failed HDD I've now installed Vsido on an old Toshiba Satelitte with a P4 3.0Ghz CPU 2GB ram and a 60Gb HDD. (yes everything is working perfectly especially the wireless at the moment.) However there is one Issue and I'm not sure if system or Steam itself. I've had Steam installed on multiple Distros and I've not seen it do this yet. (Please see attachment) Steam was installed directly from the Repos using Apt-get. I'm not sure what to make of this as its not Fluxbox themes interfering (as far as I can tell).

Any thoughts on what is causing this?

And on a random note is Adblock plus auto installing itself normal right now?

Welcome back man... It is good to see you again and we are glad to have you

Hopefully all is better and you can get back to enjoying VSIDO!

Ty for the welcome.

While the laptop didn't end up working out (RAM way to expensive to justify) I did get to build a free system that has the following specs
Intel Pentium D 3.2Ghz
4Gb DDR2 800
BFG Geforce 7900 GS OC
160Gb HDD + 1Tb external attached

This should be an interesting experience I'm downloading the ISO now as I type this.

Hello all it has been quite a long time since I was last online here. Many many things have happened in the interim and it left me without a laptop for a long while but I will be picking up a Dell D620 in a couple of days and installing Vsido on it. Well anywho figured I would do a semi re-intorduction since it has been so long…

So…… Hello All!

Hi cobaltwolfe, did you try

Code: [Select]
sudo ceni

It is doing this during boot not while its already up. It does this regardless of whether or not ceni is installed or not.

Thanks for the update cobaltwolfe...  glad to see you got the wifi sorted

Regarding your long boot times, are you seeing anything that is pointing to it? If not, edit your main grub line when it comes up by hitting e.  Remove 'quiet' from the line and then boot it with ctrl + x

This will at least give us an idea as to what is slowing it down
Its trying to autoconnect wifi during boot that is slowing it down. Gets stuck on
DHCPDISCOVER on wlan0 to port 67 interval 7

And does this maybe six times before it decides that there are no working leases in perdistent database.

I'm doing this from my phone at the moment but I'll post up exactly what's its telling me in a bit.

Attachment pic of it added.

Alright so there is finally an update to this one. Ceni has been working completely fine this whole time, went to a friends house to hardline net and tested it on their wireless first. I'm thinking that what was going on is ceni just does not like public wifi that has to be verified. Got on their net and installed Wicd for public and ceni is going to be for home use. Everything is running wonderfully except for a long boot time at the moment.
