General Support / Re: Blinking Cursor on logout
« on: April 10, 2013, 08:33:22 AM »
I just had a look @ the Debian package site, but the numbering is strange between the Unstable and experimental. Unstable lists xserver-common at 2:1.12 while experimental lists 2:1.10. That's one thing I hate most about Linux packages -- there's no consistant package naming scheme between distros.

But it looks like Debian is stuck at 1.12 for awhile. I could try to pull the experimental packages in, but there's not a full listing of them as compared to unstable and I don't want to create dependency-hell.

I just installed the new Nvidia beta drivers, which I thought was dependant on xserver-xorg 1.13, but it seems to be working fine with 1.12.

Just grabbed it, plus the new Nvidia Beta 319 drivers. Haven't had time to notice much of anything, except for the new features in the nvidia-settings. So cool.

I'll keep an eye on the CPUs.

welcome aboard, ew! Hopefully you'll get all of the GPT stuff settled and get VSIDO installed.

VSIDO's been the BEST OOTB Debian install, and comes with many goodies to play with. I was mostly an Xfce fan, but after VSIDO, I've been using Fluxbox more and more. Between VSIDO Fluxbox and my Manjaro Openbox, I have begun to stumble about when using Xfce  ???  :o

Have some fun, and begin your new Conky obsession  8)

@jedi -- sorry for that :)

It looks like Xorg 1.14 isn't available yet in SID. I thought it was, but got it confused with my Manjaro (Arch) partitions, which use 1.14. I went to check after I posted that reply and found that I was in error. My bad.

I thought that you had, perhaps, fixed the problem since you hadn't replied and was posting some nice scrots in that thread over there.

Nvidia just released a new Beta driver for Linux with improved Optimus support. You might want to use sgfxi and see if that helps.

he-he. We all sometimes miss the obvious, mainly do to frustration when things don't work. I've ruined many an install by doing that.

Anyway, how did you install the Nvidia drivers? Did you use SMXI/SGFXI or did you use use Synaptic/APT. If using Apt,did you blacklist the Nouveau driver?

The blinking cursor usually means the driver module isn't loading...

Inxi states that you have Xorg 1.12 -- did you try upgrading to 1.13?

This is probably stupid question, but did you go into Nvidia Settings and check what the resolution was in there? Did you check your xorg.conf (or Nvidia.conf) under /etc/X11? Nvidia Settings has an "auto-detect" fuction you can use, or you can enter it manually through the gui or in the .conf file.

I've don't have a laptop, but I've never had an issue with Nvidia not setting my screen resolution properly. Nouveau, on the other hand, isn't as sharp for detection.

WM Designs and Discussions / Re: Fluxbox Styles
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:47:14 AM »
The styling is nicer than Openbox, with the option to have rounded corners on the menus and all. I did some reading, and finally found out how to add SHADE to the Window Decorations. I've been slowly tweaking Fluxbox, and aside from my own errors causing the looping login-thing, I'm really liking it.

I was even thinking about delving into customizing some of the themes and make them my own.

It was a weird happenstance that VastOne decided to go Fluxbox shortly after I personally discovered it while testing AntiX-base-beta.

Sorry, I left the computer for a few hours.

The download was faster, but I didn't time it. Direct download always takes longer than wget. The from Google-drive completed in less time. I'm just used to waiting and waiting for a dl to complete, but it was done before I realized it. And complete.

@ VastOne: nope. Sorry. I only got about 185 mb on that last direct download using Google Chrome with a wireless g connection.

@VastOne: I haven't tried the direct download since the first few ISO's. After a few failed dls with partial files, I just began using the wget command, which atuo-restarts any interupts in the process and makes like easier (as long as I cd into the right directory to find it ;)

As a test, I just began a direct download with the latest ISO.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Looks about a 1/2 hour.

@Colonel Panik: sorry your intro thread got hijacked!  Ask us anything, and get comfortable -- VSIDO is fabulous.

Yep, it was a malformed expression in the menu file when I tried to add the weather conky. I forgot to add the ending *)* at the end of the entry.

Fluxbox is touchy:P  :-[

Thanks for the tips, VastOne!

Thanks for the quick reply.

Okay, I'll give that a try. I was looking over everything trying to figure out what went wrong, but even the var/log files weren't helpful.

Well, here goes...

I need to have some of you who are having download issues run some type of a sniffer to see what is going on.  It is random and very difficult to trace from my end

It makes no sense...

I just figured the connection timed out. It happens @ Sourceforge, too.
