I've Got a Life / Re: RIP Ian Murdock
« on: December 31, 2015, 02:03:52 AM »
Sometimes it takes a tragedy like this to put into perspective your personal problems.  I apologize for my not being around for a very long time but I knew if there would be one place where this could be discussed not as a news item but as people it would be here.  Ian's death, regardless of the circumstances is a HUGE shock.  I can't imagine the impact on those who worked with him and loved him.  My heart goes out to them.  I was working on a project a few years ago and corresponded with Ian when he was at Sun.  I found him helpful, humble and human. Like many others I followed him on twitter, like many others I saw his tweets and hoped it was fake or something like that.

The contributions that this person made to everyone who uses a computer, regardless of the OS, the success of open source and so many things related can not be underestimated.  Ian was a giant thinker/doer, who started a journey for millions of people. He was someone who did not seek the credit, limelight or notoriety for truly contributing something of value. He was a rare individual. RIP.

How To's / Re: How To : Record effortlessly from terminal in VSIDO/Linux

Great stuff.  Completely forgot about sox.  I was actually looking for something else when I came across this and a better solution than mine (of course).  I had a bunch of sox scripts and like everything else ... no idea what I did with them.

Happy H'days everyone.

VSIDO Installation Help / Re: new install hangs at bleachbit
« on: October 23, 2014, 04:41:57 PM »
There is no reason Jedi should not install fine and no reason you should not be able to run the latest and greatest on that box with Fluxbox.

I don't want to overstep my bounds but I don't think this is flux or Ext4 that is causing the problem.  I can't imagine why bleachbit would cause an issue on any old box nor why the install script would not work  I am not sure where the new install script logs itself but I would guess that you should be able to run the following after it fails in the script

Code: [Select]
tail -n 50 /var/log/syslog > sys.txt
tail -n 50 /var/log/apt/apt/history.log > apt.txt
tail -n 50 /var/log/dmesg > dmes.txt

and then attach those files here so I can have a look and see if the system is telling us what the issue is.  Alternatively you can look in those files yourself and probably tell us more.

I haven't noticed anything I don't like about the tab setup, except what PackRat has already mentioned when I open a new app I have to drag it into the tab grouping I want.  I have 3 screens and one screen has my dev tabs, one screen has my play tabs (browser, email, music) and the other has my calendar, todoist, geany for note taking and each of the three have either a root or regular terminator window.  It's just incredibly cool and efficient.  I too am searching for a key combo to add an app to a tab group.  I am sure it's been done but no luck yet.  The alt+tab shifts between groups by the way and the win+tab shifts within a group.  Too cool!

Almost forgot.  I too blame PackRat  :P

Is QBall still around?  A really excellent developer and all round great guy.  Not to be bro-ish or anything but GMB was my first introduction to VastOne.  Those layouts are epic and I noted the designer (so I guess I started stalking you then v-ger!).

That how to is legendary and still very useful.  I switched to MPD to serve music to my appliances (chromecast, phones, tablets etc.) but now using plex it may not be needed.  I remember some issue with playlists but it's vague I will have a look.

Yes, I really am trying to uncover the true Jedi© since the man is such an enigma  ;)

Not sure about a statmonkey layout.  I really don't know if the VastOne layouts could be any better.  They are so perfect.  I would miss all my fun little mpd scripts but I guess I am also starting to get bored with them after all these years.

Kicking a dead dog here but .... seems not worthy of a new thread.

As part of the reinstall for Jedi© I will be setting up my mpd and conky again.  I have a pretty nice little conky and rating script set up that uses mpdris to either display the album cover on the desktop or my preference to pop up a bunch of album info and the cover in an OSD on command.  I just noticed this:

Quote
mpDris

Note: This project is no longer maintained, please use mpDris2 instead.

mpDris is a bit of a blackbox to me.  I never really looked at how it does it.  Is it interchangeable with mpdris2?

I was also curious since it's such a basic part of the visual aspect of VSIDO why it was never part of the install?  I think it and eyed3 are things that we all use?  I mean it would be nothing to make debs of them if there is interest and in fact could probably package them as a unit for inclusion.  FWIW.  A little late on that I guess.  This is kind of a dead dog kicking a dead dog post lol.

It was tempting Jedi but that would not be in keeping with your original post.  Now if you want to start using an avatar from when you were 16 I will switch to Cheryl from the same time frame.  I really don't think she is looking that horrible considering Meg Ryan and Renee Zellwinger photo's I have seen recently.

Thanks for that info, now have the wiki up.  Great.  I will look at the overlay as well.

I was not really feeling chastised, I appreciate the input.  I guess my pithy sense of humor does not display itself in these posts.  I would have thought the avatar was a hint tho.  8)

Great to see you in here.  Really like what you have done and understand the difficulties of manual writing.  I have written several and .... ugh never again.  I have some other questions which I will post to you later today.

 :D

hmm there might be an acronym somewhere ....? RTFM or something?

Honestly, I have never given flux a real shot.  PJ (pre-jedi) I did an install and didn't use the box for a few days other than reading posts and mail and then the first time I had to actually do some work I got impatient and installed OB.  I really am trying to give it it's just due and actually am reading the manual.  The wiki seems to have died though, kind of a bummer.

Thanks for the info PackRat and the light rap on the knuckles.  You are of course correct, criticizing or disdaining an app without really diving into the documentation is unfair to you and the application.

It's a big deal because I really hate having panels, or jumping screens or alt tab.  I can speed my flipping back and forth up quite a bit and I am not moving my eyes from where I am already working to find it.  Just boom all 3 or 4 or 5 apps are right there at the top of my user space in a really thin line and actively ready.  And because it is nerdilicious!

Now if I can just figure out auto-grouping.  What I understand is that you can group apps together so you can have say a coding workspace with the ide, geany, etc in one group and have it automatically group when you call all or some of the apps.

 Super-Duper Time-Saving with Tabs

Fluxbox's tabs feature groups multiple applications into a single window.  just  drag your chosen apps together. To remove an app from your tabbed group, simply ctl left click and  drag it on out of there, or click to bring it to the front and click the close button. Each app operates normally with its own tabs. The one change is all of them have to have the same window size, since they're sitting together in a single window.

Notice how the window titles display full titles and file paths. So you can have five apps open on one screen and switch back and forth by clicking on them no need to close or drag or anything just pop out.  Try it and you will get it.

I need to show how incredibly thick headed I am.

After my fresh install of VSIDO_JEDI © I had decided to try fluxbox again.  After all this time of being in and out of fluxbox I never new why so many people thought it was great, I mean Open Box to me was just so much easier to work in.  Then tonight I stumbled across something that I had read before about fluxbox and voilà! I actually read it, then wondered does this really mean what I think it means?

Yes, I finally figured out that ctl+left click would tab your applications into groups and what that actually means in practice.  I am pretty sure PackRat tried to explain this to me and Jedi talk about it several times and I nodded my head as if I got it but ... well I just never grokked it.  This is like finding a $100.00 bill in your pocket!

Yes, I need a life and yes I am a nerd.

I don't really have anything in mind at the moment but was looking at the potential of the python plugins which should be able to be used similar to the plugins provided for SpaceFM.  In particular the dropbox stuff which I use fairly regularly.  The docs here are not well flushed out but it does seem that any basic python script could be used as a plugin with a little effort.  I tend not to use python much and don't really have anything I can think of that would be useful.  If there is anything you had that would work as a proof of concept it would be worth testing to see how functional it really is.
