Stunningly beautiful wallpaper!
^^ Yes, share that wall.
Glutton for punishment, clean install of funtoo - all day to get to this point (sort of missing VSIDO at the moment):

good ol' vsido on the desktop, though -

that, and a nice choice of music.
@vastone - gentoo/gentoo based distros are the only mainline disto that I've never completely installed (had a couple epic failures though) so it's now the current quest to get a gentoo system up and running.
As a sidebar note to anyone with mad gimp skills; can that VSIDO orb logo in the terminal be made semi-transparent so it looks more like a watermark?
^ That is how mine is by making it that via the terminal... having said that I will now get to work on replacing the image with a semi transparent one
Thanks for the suggestion! 8)
VSIDO (server) -

Just have to figure out how to get a custom kernel to compile correctly (3 epic failures to date) on funtoo/gentoo and that will be it. Got everything else working the way I want.
^ Nice work Mr Rat Man!
I am getting 3.14 ISO's ready as we speak... they will be out in an hour.
Your server is already there, how do you like the 3.14 kernel?
It is smooth. I tweak it for my cpu and unload some of the video drivers - like trident - that I'll never use and pick up a bit of performance.
Unfortunately, the gentoo build script has failed twice on me - X doesn't work. Tried a manual configure and screwed the pooch on that one myself. The debian method I use always works - score one for debian. I'll have to plow through the gentoo wiki a bit more before trying again.
Using VSIDO for an NFS file/media server. Need to get it going as an (internal) ftp server; I carried over my ftp configuration from slackware (or so I thought), but something isn't right now. But all things considered VSIDO as server = happiness.
My first for May! You know me and blue...

Great to hear that about a VSIDO server... How do you go about the tweak and removal with the kernel? That would be a great How To if you ever felt up to it

This is the method I use for a debian kernel -
http://verahill.blogspot.com/2012/07/compiling-kernel-35-on-debian-testing.html (http://verahill.blogspot.com/2012/07/compiling-kernel-35-on-debian-testing.html)
You need to install kernel-package, fakeroot, and build-essential for this to work.
There is also a site called kernel seeds (kernelseeds.org I think) that has some good commands to determine your hardware - appears to be down at the moment.
The only additional step I do is after the make oldconfig command. Once you have answered all the questions, use the command -
make menuconfig
to bring up a graphical menu of your kernel config file. I make these changes -
Change the cpu type to my cpu - the default is generic 64 or 32 bit
Change the maximum number of CPUs to what you have or 2x what you have - the default is 512 CPUs and something like 8k of memory is alloted for each one.
The real changes are in the drivers sections - usually your hardware isn't going yo change, so you can remove plenty of stuff you don't have - like broadcom ethernet devices and trident video cards.
That decreases the size of the compiled kernel, as well as memory needed since those drivers are dropped - and won't get loaded.
Save the new config and finish the steps in that linked guide.
The performance increases are really only slight - it's more about building a more efficient kernel designed for your computer.
The Slackware beginners' guide and Arch Wiki have good HowTo's for building kernels that are generic build instructions.
oh right. screenshot thread; more funtoo - including the menu from "make menuconfig"

Verrrry close to blue!
Incredible desktop as usual jedi.
Trust Spring has warmed up northern Maine. :)
Thanks zbreaker, it is indeed starting to warm up! Nothing green growing yet though...
Green is nice; good job jedi, green is also tough to make work in a theme.
Two shots - desktop running VSIDO, laptop running Funtoo. I knew compiling everything would require more disk space, but not like this. Same basic setup as far as installed apps go - because vastone made awesome choices with VSIDO (note the installed packages though).
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/may13994805641600x900.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/may13994805641600x900.php) (http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/may13994782261366x768.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/may13994782261366x768.php)
I went through the Funtoo and Gentoo install manuals again - they don't really point out how much disk space a "typical" desktop setup would require - just a 10 GB minimum for / mentioned in the Gentoo manual.

Thank you for this... I really enjoy all the apps installed, and must admit that I always hope everyone else does too... as anyone knows, all requests are listened to and debated. To hear you say this makes my day!
I appreciate all you do and say Rat Man! (If you have read Stephen King - The Stand, then you know Rat Man)
^ I read The Stand when I was living in Las Vegas. Now we have to tag a suitable forum member as the Trashcan Man 8)
M O O N that spells Trashy
That is a really easy one... lwfitz is Trash... just look at the spew from his avatar

Yes, lwfitz does indeed have a knack for disturbing avatars :D
More for May... Not really any changes other than wallpaper...

Man!
Oh and nice scrot too! ???
@PackRat...yes for some time now. I do use it even though it is not open source. It is snappy and reliable.
^ Huh?
Linux and not Open.. interesting choice, one obviously open to anyone to make...
What exactly does it cost?
Opera has been free of cost for many years. They were innovators ages ago of tabbed browsing long before Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox.
Any who utilize flash/nvidia blob etc are guilty as charged until equal open source alternatives exist. It is indeed a delicate philosophical balance 8)

Totally stock VSIDO install on my MBP. Secondary (right) click now functions perfectly OTB with fluxbox.
That is unless VastOne did something that Im unaware of ;D
That right click was the only thing that kept me from using FB on all my machines........ no more excuses!
@jeffreyc - no problem - there are worse addictions 8)
@lwfitz - you need to do something special to get the right click working?
back on topic -

I think that wall is from here - http://wallpaperswide.com/ (http://wallpaperswide.com/) - my other favorite wallpaper site.
I am not aware of any right click not working issues... Of course I do not work with any Windows shite either that lwfitz lubs so much
Nice scrot and layout PackRat
@vastone - thanks.
I've seen hardware related issues for other people trying to get Linux installed on a macbook pro; never paid them much attention since I don't have anything mac. I know that Arch has a rather lengthy wiki page about getting Arch up and running on a macbook though.
@jeffreyC.....wow, nice link...thanks!
@ VastOne, I am deeply offended that would even think I love windows anything! :'( :'(
@ packrat, Getting the right click to work properly on a desktop manager hasn't been an issue but for the life of me I couldn't get it to work on fb. Its a pretty simple adjustment to the xorg config which sets a two finger click as your right click.
I bought the mac for work and its nice but I have a deep seeded distain for apple so every time I use it I feel a little more like I sold my soul.
^ I see.
Well, funtoo ran it's course - nothing against it (or gentoo) pretty solid release; just more than I want to deal with at the moment. Back to VSIDO:

That was the deciding factor. After properly configuring the partitions for the way I use the computer, it would take a couple days to get everything installed while figuring out the solutions for the compiling errors I was getting. No time for that.
Always time for fvwm though;
