Title: January 2014 Screenshots
Post by: PackRat on January 01, 2014, 01:35:41 PM
I'll start -

A couple new fluxbox styles I'm messing with -

Happy and prosperous 2014 to all.

and remember (shamelessly taken from #! forum):

Please use thumbnails (please try to avoid the large thumbnail imgur.com code) linking to the larger image to help those of us with slow connections. Most image hosting sites will automatically generate this for you as well.

Thanks.

I like the release notes at Siduction - first I read that Debian was considering using Ubuntu's new init system "upstart". I would think Debian would stay with the base trend and go systemd. I think the next major release of Slackware (15, I suppose) will be systemd.

back on topic - set up a home ftp server on my Slackware box - so far so good:

First scrot of 2014.  The new install of the alpha ISO released for testing last night that implements systemd.  Flawless as usual VastOne.  Even with all my apps installed and running, everything is smooth no bugs/issues/errors!

I haven't posted a scrot this year?  The new WUN weather script by MrPeachy at the top right.  Simple system conky on the left with a neat little "inxi" trick at the bottom that shows the temperature outside of the city I live in.  (well if it can be called a city)  There's really no such thing as a city in the Northern Maine Woods!

And yes I switched back to Tint2!  Sorry lxpanel, I just like the looks of Tint2 better!  BTW, the WUN weather script I mentioned is definitely cool as it's "interactive" or "clickable".  Click on the 'Hours' button at the bottom, and it'll give you the next 10 hours forecast for whatever weather station you have it pointed at.  Also the 10 after that!  As well as being able to click on each day and get a more detailed forecast up top beside the current weather icon.  Some really sweet LUA work indeed.

Also, while we are probably not the first to utilize 'inxi' in a Conky, it is a great idea and was basically effortless on my part to get it done since VastOne did it for me!!!  What a dev huh?  If it'll show you the weather where you live, imagine what else you can do with it!

much easier just to have my fonts uploaded to my site http://ks392457.kimsufi.com/stuff/fonts/ (http://ks392457.kimsufi.com/stuff/fonts/) and might put them up on gnome-look.org or whatever.

It's actually a nice app.

You can theme/configure it from the command line or set defaults in .Xresources.

Still messing around. Have tint2 set up as icons only so it acts as a pager/icon box of sorts:

Very cool PakRat

If your ears were burning today, I was talking about you on the IRC channel today... and everyone agrees...

Paraphrasing:

what I think is awesome is PackRats knowledge of FluxBox.. and how easily he helps ppl with it
he is a smart guy with the WM's
not just fluxbox
indeed
incredibly bright
and yeah, he helps everyone

I want to publicly thank you here as well, we appreciate all that you do!

Thank you

I have a wife and two kids; my ears are always burning    ;D

Otherwise, no problem, thank you for providing the community with VSIDO and the forum.

back on topic; after two years or so, a new version of jwm was released last week:

(http://s17.postimg.org/kxjwcdwd7/January_1390015872_1366x768.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/kxjwcdwd7/)

Never really gave this wm a go; but it's light and snappy. If I can figure out how to manipulate window resize and move incrementally with key bindings I may keep it around for a while.

Configuration and theme are done in a single configuration file in xml format (like openbox) and default is to have a button on the tray for "show desktop" (ew's ears are burining now   :D)

@ jedi - Love the green. Just out of curiosity, what benefit do you get/like from a drop-down terminal? I've set one up just to see it in action, but never really gave it a go. Always curious to know the hows and whys of when app-meets-user.

The drop-down feature is nice when your doing a lot of stuff in the terminal, you can just hit a key on the keyboard and it is gone, but still working.  Hit the key again and there it is still doing whatever it is that you had it doing.  Probably not for everyone, I had used Quake drop down terminal in the past, (long ago) and had been looking for another.  Xfce4-terminal --drop-down does a wonderful job.  It also adds a tab in the preferences to make some adjustments...

Also nice if you are using GUI and need to do a quick command i.e. kill a program that is behaving badly.
Or using something like plait or pms (poor mans spotify)

Hi VastOne,
Mr.Bacon is really cool.
So far, I have been learning the basics of distro(lette) construction...work in progress.
I would like to move to a Sid base so I am planning a dwmX config based on Sid with BBQ base+roast your own 'stuff'...
I have had problems generating a Sid based dwmX with Refracta...does not compute Man  ???
I want to run the development of dwmX 'wheezy' and 'sid' in parallel and that is in the pipeline....

Time, of course, is the enemy!  ::) ...too many night shifts recently...destroying my Karma...

I will try and keep you updated...

VSIDO is rocking as per usual - keep up the great work Man  8)

@zbreaker thanks

messing around with a different window manager - goomwwm (get out of my way window manager) - written by the person who wrote musca. A floating wm with some tiling capability. Read more about it at the Arch wiki/forums -

Pretty standard stuff today -

Window manager hopping this week. Dropped goomwwm, and went with subtle wm. Conky piped to dzen2 for the bottom bar. ; Edit got the sublets working for system info, thinned the window borders:
