I am surprised by so much ram in use.. what else is running?
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: lwfitz on November 12, 2013, 06:26:32 PM
Thanks VastOne. I believe the ram usage was cause by chromium. It seems to be a serious ram hog lately.
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: dizzie on November 12, 2013, 10:31:51 PM
^ Chrome loves ram, and a lot of it. Typical for me, chrome use like 2-3GB+  ;D
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: statmonkey on November 12, 2013, 10:51:43 PM
I am seeing the same issue with chrome and iceweasel experimental btw.  I am now using midori/elinks for most of my non-media browsing.  Not sure if it is me but iceweasel was hanging a lot, chrome was really slow in addition to both of them claiming over 2gb of ram.  I have 32 gb of ram but that is for running code in a ram sandbox so I already use a lot of overhead would rather not donate any of that space to my browser.
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: VastOne on November 12, 2013, 10:59:39 PM
I use Iceweasel more than anything...

Several tabs open at all times
Weather
RSS feed
VSIDO Forum work
Email
paying all bills
and of course the massive Internet

For all of this I never see anything above 700 MiB at any time and never have it fail on me or lock up

If that makes me a phanboi, then so be it...   :P
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: lwfitz on November 13, 2013, 01:21:04 AM
Chrome with one tab open uses about 500mb and then with a couple tabs open and streaming music with google music I see chrome hitting about 2gb.

that sort of ram usage something new for chromium?

replaced graphics card and did some distro hopping - we'll see how long this lasts (don't realize how much you like apt until you no longer have it):

Chrome and chromium both have always been massive memory hogs but for me this is the worst its been.

@PackRat, the bg's I've been using lately are by a guy (or girl) named Sakasa at nedgoo.com.

Here is VSIDO Raptor 64bit, with KDE 4.11.3.  Very smooth, fast, and pleasing to the eye.  Runs flawlessly in VSIDO! (of course)

@jedi, that is nice...

How did you manage to get KDE 4.11.3 installed?  I have tried only to have it error out
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: jedi on November 14, 2013, 02:44:03 AM
I had to install some .deb files separately from the kde-full install.  It was telling me I had some held broken packages.  If I'd known anyone else was going to try it I would have taken some notes.  It took me a while to get it going.  Very sleek, very smooth...

One may ask, 'dafuq is so special about this?'

It is a debian live-build livecd session of VSIDO...

The installer is not working (yet, waiting for feedback from a bug I submitted) but as you can see it is getting closer...

I told you all I was a hibernating / coder

It is now 32f here and this is fun... (cept for the grade A fecking headache I have battling debian-live crap)

Once again... Is this really what you see?

This is a VSIDO LiveCD built by debian's live-build...

Just waiting for a correct installer kernel and it should be installable... this should happen tommorow

The ISO is at 583 right now, which is not bad...

ozitraveller ... Thanks for being so persistent!

^ How's void working out for you? I gave it a try, but the font rendering wasn't too good on my system (HP laptop) and some other issues. Didn't have the time then to really get it straightened out. Seemed like a solid distro otherwise; hope it stays around.

@PackRat
VOID is really nice and stable with a fast boot.
The package list is growing daily and it is possible to build packages yourself (I must admit I haven't tried this yet...)
The package system 'xbps' works a bit like Arch 'pacman'.
Definitely a distro to keep an eye on in the future.

Getting familiar with the cli.  Mutt, weechat, the famous NSA Deterrence Module, and of course we can't be without moc!  Still Fluxbox, and a vertical weather script from v9000 (mrpeachy).  Hidden is the lxpanel on the bottom, and of course the one at the top right for sys tasks.  The horizontal Conky at the top is the default VSIDO Conky by VastOne with a couple minor tweaks...  Everything I need from the one screen.  Of course there are 3 other 'virtual' desktops to do with as I please...  (Not shown in this scrot)

On the other virtual desktops, there are a total of 3 VM's running accounting for the large use of RAM you see in the Conky!  Another virtual desktop is running Iceweasel with around 20 tabs open.  Hey with 16Gb of RAM, might as well use it!  VSIDO is just to cool!!!
Some of the weechat transcripts redacted to protect the innocent.

Wow, just noticed, my 700th post!  Most ever in a forum for me, unless you count my own site which is not a forum site at all.

On topic, thanks to the above configs from statmonkey, VastOne, and dizzie.  The bg came from Sakasa at vedgoo dot com.  v9000 from mrpeachy!
Title: Re: November 2013 ScreenShots
Post by: statmonkey on November 22, 2013, 05:41:18 PM
700 posts.  Only 3 years more and I'll get there.  I'll never get to 700 posts even on my website.  Because like my system I get tired of it and rewrite it.  Now if we are talking 700 re-installs or 700 different web layouts I might have a chance.

That is a set up with some real cli love.  Looks like something Digit would do (and that is a compliment).  Good to see you embrace the darkside Jedi. I need to start upping my mpd scripts to get you off moc though :)

VastOne,  The latest 2013_12_08 is perfection!  Had a bit of a goof, at the start of the install or I think I could have beaten your 3 minute 33 second install time!  Boots fast, everything works as advertised, and to me even the sound sounds better...
Total Install time of 3 minutes 44 seconds!  Hard to beat that with all the apps and the perfect distro anyone would ever need!  8)
