Title: VSIDO ASCII
Post by: Digit on September 27, 2013, 10:41:43 AM
we like screenfetch.  it's nice.
it could be nicer, with a vsido logo, rather than a debian one...

with that in mind, dizzie and me were having a little poke around.

here's a reasonably well refined version (compared to both our earlier attempts)...
              ..,,;::ccc:;'.
          ..';:cccccccccccc:;'.
        .':cccc:,,'...'';:cccc:'.
      .':ccc:'.. ..,:ccc,.
     .,ccc;'.               .,ccc,.
    .,ccc'. .':cc.
    'cc:..         ...'.. .:c,.
   .:c:. .',..... ,c:.
   'cc' .,'.            .cc.
  .;c;. ,,. .:c.
  .:c'         .:.              .::.
  .:c. .:. .:,.
  .:c. .;:.             ';.
xl.,c,.xl..:lclc.lk: ;xoccod:..,,.:lcll:.
xX.'c:cW:.0d. .; .Kd,cMo .'cKXc.,Kd. .;kO.
.Xd.;c0o 'Wk' 0l'oMk;:;;;Xx kK. .Xd
 oW:.o0' 'dK0d. 0: :Md... 0k 0k 0k
.KK'0x:. .:kO 0: :Mo .Xd kK. .Xd
  :W00;c:;;. .dd 0: :Mo .cKk. 'Kd. .;0k.
   cx,.,coOdcl:. .d: ;xocclc;. .:lcll:.
       .':c:.
         .;c:,.
          ..;c:'.
            ..,::,...
               .',;:;,'.....
                   .',:ccc;.

feel free to echo that into a terminal to see.   heh, i'm too lazy to scrot it for you just yet.
(i'll come back n make this thread's original post nice later.)

oh, and that was made using jp2a.sudo apt-get install jp2a && man jp2a

to be specific, i used this command (on a pic i had just made specificly intended to work cleanly in ascii):jp2a --colors --size=42x26 ~/images/vsido/vsidoforascii-mk2.jpg (and of course just added a " > filename" to get it saved nice n neat for later, in a form which is more easy to get.

now we just need to get that added to screenfetch's code.  ;)
... er, or refined a bit more before we do.  ;)

Thats AWESOME! I have always wanted to get my hands into making different ascii logos on screenfetch and I think the vsido logo would be a great place to start! Good job dizzie and digit!

Well since this is the artwork section of vsido forums, this would be a viable place to ask.

I have been in touch with the screenfetch dev discussing how to implement new distros into the code (as I am not proficient enough with it).

He has agreed to put in the ascii and all the info for VSIDO once we get a design down :)

So if anyone has a design already made in ascii or want to contribute on making one then go ahead and post some stuff! This is our chance to further customize a great distro :D

screenfetch is a simple executeable script, and we have already edited it, someone has it, cant remember who :)

Nice going though :) I think Digit and VastOne have the ansi somewhere :)

Oh for sure! I am not surprised that it has been edited, though I think adding it to the repo for future people to use is a good thing!

I mean if VSIDO takes off, it would be awesome to just have an install of screenfetch 'just work' with the proper ascii eh? :)

When that happens, it will be added in the 'vsido-welcome' script.

There is reasons (yet) for why we aren't on (and probably never will) distrowatch, etc :)

I see! I can understand the distrowatch bit as I think it would be OVERWHELMING for VastOne if a hundred people just showed up and started complaining haha (I don't think they would though).

I have done all the changes to the current screenfetch for VSIDO and it is set except for the ascii... If I can get the code that digit and dizzie did without carriage returns then I can easily add it

I also did all the editing to archey and can do the same for that

Neat! Well then I am not sure of you would want me to give it to him then as we have our own xD

Just let me know!

If we ever get it settled, I will give it to both the archey devs and screenfetch devs...

Thanks Roadie!

i'm still working on refining.

was doing a manually created one (with a little help from figlet) this morning.

... it's getting there.

we're in no hurry are we?

ps, duplicate thread, in the same section with the same title...?  huh?  http://vsido.org/index.php/topic,529.0.html (http://vsido.org/index.php/topic,529.0.html)

heh, yeah, i shoulda just merged the moment i noticed.

anyhoo, i'm posting this, in "release early, release often" model, more out of a need to calm the heck down!   i'll be hitting burn-out in a week at this rate.

so... here's one of the computer generated ones (i think i used just gimp and aview for it ~ yes, gimp can save ascii),
and the manually made one i was working on.   ~ it certainly could use a lot of refinement yet, but it's already a lot better than anything i've gotten out of attempts at automatic generation from images.

http://hastebin.com/cucolimaci.tex (http://hastebin.com/cucolimaci.tex)

(the gimp saved one seems to have a few characters hastebin doesnt like, so the "VSIDO" has gone a bit italic.  ~ not that it was all that legible in the first place)

I would like VSIDO to succeed on it's own merit... Not by any of us driving people to a banner plagued site that is casino like rigged, you know where the house always wins....

Good points ectropy

fair comments, however...

why was that posted in this thread?

fair enough if responding to some off the cuff offtopic comment that was actually made in this thread...  but since it's not, i suggest taking another look at: http://vsido.org/index.php/topic,546.msg6420.html#msg6420 (http://vsido.org/index.php/topic,546.msg6420.html#msg6420)

[edit](oh wait, my bad... distrowatch comment was in here... string search fail.   lol, thought that was a misplaced rant outta the blue)[/edit]

p.s.
to me, popularity (or even a promoted perception of popularity), is not synonymous with success.  ;)
value of the thing in its own right.  ;)

This IS a thread about ANSI/ASCII, and NOT about Distrowatch.

Back on topic, or... go somewhere else with your outburst about how great this and that is !
