Interesting -

Is that a gimp image in the conkyrc or part of the wallpaper? Or perhaps a lua background.

@lwfitz, dizzie - nice looking desktops.

Some heat issues with the 3.10 kernels, trying an upgrade:

@ packrat

Thanks! Same to you!

You having CPU or GPU heat issues?
Title: Re: September 2013 Screenshots
Post by: PackRat on September 10, 2013, 12:10:38 PM
CPU heat issues. Upgrading to the 3.11 kernel has worked out well - temps not going above mid 50's C with video running and other apps going.

I don't know if I can get the temp of my intel graphics on this laptop - be nice if I could. Have to check on that.

Back on topic -

bspwm - tiling window manager written by an Arch linux user (dedicated thread on their forum):

(http://t.imgbox.com/ach02vtj.jpg) (http://imgbox.com/ach02vtj)

Second time I've checked this out. Nice tiler, default layout is unique (see Arch forum for details). Bit tricky to get installed and configured, if I figure some more of it out I'll post some results in the wm thread.

Wow, great stuff from everyone!

I have not posted anything for a while, been busy with Golf and new builds...

Here is a scrot of what may look like my usual stuff and it is... but, look at the mem usage (scrot from first boot) and the kernel... this is a new build, and under the hood has totally changed...

(http://s17.postimg.org/sx6cna80b/2013_09_10_1378821994_1024x768_scrot.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/sx6cna80b/)

After a week or so of testing, I will release it... PM me if you want a link to the ISO for testing purposes.  I will be looking for feedback... also, look for a new topic in VSIDO discussions on directions we are thinking about

^ what services are running / not running to get that memory usage?

booted the live usb and kicked the tires on the new build for a bit; smooth.

back on topic - bspwm; it's nice but still prefer fluxbox and i3 - tabbed windows are so much better IMHO:

@vastone -

the actual key binding is in the screenshot - i3 this time

the script I use - scrot_delay.sh - is taken from an example in the scrot man page:

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh
exec scrot -q 100 -c -d 5 '%B_%s_$wx$h.jpg' -e 'mv $f ~/pictures/' &
exit 0

use it in key binding or terminal.

it would seem that lwfitz is in a cursing mode these days:

Post by: VastOne on September 18, 2013, 12:13:33 AM
^ Thanks

I settled with this in fluxbox keys to be the default in VSIDO

Code: [Select]
107 :Exec scrot -d 6 '%Y-%m-%d--%s_$wx$h_scrot.png' -e 'mv $f ~/images/scrots & mirage ~/images/scrots/$f'
Damn freaky ass clowns and curses!

Edit - Fixed the code to work properly

i'd share the other 8 workspaces with stuff on them too... but who has time for that.  ;)
*just given myself the idea of making a scrot script that'd make a thumb, and upload, and output the bbcode to xclip*
[edit]http://hastebin.com/rutuhiqine.parser3 (http://hastebin.com/rutuhiqine.parser3) hehe, first quick draft to get the idea down.  i'll get it refined and working sometime, havnt tried it, cos i'm sure it probably wont work yet, as hasty scrawls rarely do work straight off the bat[/edit]

Thanks VastOne, same to you.  Whats the memory difference between lxpanel and tint2?

Tint2 (both panels) would start at 28 each but over the last month they would grow to as large as 70 each...

lxpanel (1 panel) starts and stays at 32

Just to be clear, tint2 will not be removed, just replaced... so anyone wanting to still use the original can freely do so

^ No Rat Man I do not and that frustrates me, although I could spend some time analyzing and figuring it out..

The other side of this decision I failed to mention is there has been 0 (zero) development from the tint2 folks in a long long while... Even though there have been several excellent enhancements by end users through patches they have not been included in the code

Nice scrots!

^ That's i3, right? Pretty impressive memory usage; you need to do anything special or is that pretty much default?

changed the default vsido conky a bit for laptop usage -

that's actually pypanel since I already had it installed.

@Vastone - did check out lxpanel for a bit yesterday; looking to be a good choice.

Is it a record?  It is for me!  Fastest install ever using the new 9-28 ISO.  4 minutes 21 seconds, and I had to retype my password crap cause i didn't type it in correctly the second time.  Soooo, prolly around a 4 minute install...
