Something is amiss from the sid repos today (27-August-2013)
Doing a dist-upgrade, I am seeing what you would normally see if a sid repo was not available and experimental was hit... The troubling part of this is that there are no error messages reporting a SID repo is not available. Here is a copy of what is happening. You obviously do NOT want to do this

This is NOT a SID issue after all. In all my 5 years of running SID, there has only been one failure that borked my system. I came to call it the Great Perl-Jam (with apologies to the real Great Pearl Jam)
It seems that the devs of perl occasionally jump the gun in releasing perl before any other developers can make the adjustments to their perl based code. One of the updates you see in the above post is perl, and all of the apps that are apt is trying to remove are perl based or have perl hooks
Before this becomes the Great Perl-Jam II, I will not do another dist-upgrade for 3 or more days. On the original Perl-Jam, it was about three days later these issues worked themselves out.
I am going to hit the #debian and #perl irc channels to see if I can glean any more information regarding this
Awesome! Thanks for the heads-up!
To resume normal SID programming and get updates until this Perl-Jam II resolves itself, run the following:
sudo apt-mark hold perl perl-base perl-doc perl-modules
When this is all over and we can get back to normal, you will run this to unhold the packages
sudo apt-mark unhold perl perl-base perl-doc perl-modules
I will be monitoring this for the next three days and will let you all know when it is resolved
On this transition page (http://release.debian.org/transitions/html/perl5.18.html) you can see and track the perl 5.18 transition... (Wow thats a lot of red)
^ Nice! Thanks buddy!
^ It's my job, thats what I do... ;)
Thanks (wannabe fisherman) ::) 8) ;D
^^
.............. That hurt me........... Im going to the Windows forums! :'(
Dually noted!
Now for that kernel error... :D
^ Start a new thread on it in General Help... We need to get all minds involved with this one. Since I have no Intel based graphics, I am limited... :-\
On this transition page (http://release.debian.org/transitions/html/perl5.18.html) you can see that the transition is near completion... All that red has been nearly replaced with all green.
I would say by end of day tomorrow, this will be resolved
Perl-Jam II is all over and we can now get back to normal programming
You will need to run this to unhold the packages if you did hold them
sudo apt-mark unhold perl perl-base perl-doc perl-modules
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You will see that xserver-xorg-core is being held back
You can then run
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core
to resolve that issue or wait for it to resolve on it's own. I have tested this on all my machines and everything appears to all square
Marking this as resolved
Thank you VastOne!!
You're a great and kind Overlord. :)
