No use my showing my sid sway.  Ancient Atom 1 gb netbook on a fair 6 y.o SDHC, loose power connection on computer - final days - no customization. But for doing a couple of things via vpn (say getting CBC.ca music streams into the usOFa)  wow.  Sway Does not feel experimental at all.

Sway is coming along nicely; it's my understanding the developer will also be coding a floating/stacking window manager as well in the near future.

Hello Vger and everyone! Doing a drive-by and decided to post a screenie of Crowz Fluxbox with Vsido configs! Well almost not quite for my daily driver! Running Devuan Ceres (unstable), been on my machine a long while, from ascii to beowulf and ceres over the last 6 months and not even a hiccup! :)

That desktop looks cool and I've downloaded the CROWZ OB ISO to try out. Never ran a Devuan based distro before so will try this out using a spare HD.

Hello VastOne
I hope, when the upgrade removes wicd, that you are not using it at the time.
When upgrade removes medit, with what will you replace medit?
.In with the new.  Readied for peril of mass removal.

Looks;

It has been far too long since I have posted but with a GTK3 version of GMB (https://gmusicbrowser.org/devel.html) working I had to showcase it

Still VSIDO and Fluxbox ... Holler if you have questions

I'm really not sure yet RatMan... That link is about all there is and I happened across it only by chance on the GMB IRC channel today... It for sure is not being advertised yet

Everything works in it.. It loads all the original layouts and all of the plugins work, I think I the only thing I had to make sure of was that libgtk3-perl was installed

For anyone who does load it and if you have a large library, it will take approximately 18-20 minutes (or more) as it is hardwriting your database after the first scan.. Just an FYI, it only happens after the initial scan

No doubt, same here.  Not even sure if I've posted a scot this year.  Shame on me.  I am still involved everyone believe it or not and stay in touch with VastOne.  May your golfing career be as long as since the day you began to play till now!!!  ??? (inside joke?  nahhhh it's pathetic...)

So, haven't been in the computer game much this year.  Took the year off you might say.  At the beginning of the year a new laptop was purchased for the first time since 2014 or '15, not sure.  As you'll quickly be able to tell it is a MacBook Pro and my first one ever.  I'm totally blown away by it and love it and mostly blame Linux for that!  8). Course now that GMB might be back, we'll have to see about getting that running cross environment and going on the Mac!  Yup still type too much...

Nice RatMan    8)

That is an interesting question and I am curious where the data is retrieved from because though mine shows the following it is much much older than that.. On that date shown I took an fsarchive from another machine I was shutting down due to a power supply failure

My guess is that this is from an install from 4 years ago at least.. as a matter of fact there is a thread somewhere on here where I had my last critical failure (Perl Jam II I will find it) which would have been my actual last install .. I intend to keep it alive as long as as I am

WOW longer than that actually... time is getting away from me ... PackRat and I discuss Perl Jam I and II woes (https://vsido.org/index.php?topic=756.msg8522#msg8522)

The other side of that is where, most of us keep a separate /home, a 'new' install is really just a refresh of the OS so we can get back to our settings...  8)

Hello VastOne and PackRat and everyone
Birth: -
"Unknown"
You get a date when here get a -.  (?)
In the 2014 post, VastOne stated count on two fingers [twice] in six years.  I will add here a since, once in seven years, to that.
The long story is, I got started with vsido around 2013live-2014install. one hdd failure i switched to Lite vsido and machine change.  Machine made it through two python/ perl escapades that, i did read, shut down a lot of machines. I was proud to make it through those ; But,, a xorg upgrade killed it later.  (RE)Installation brought machine to the xorg updates,,, and machine quit every time after the xorg upgrades. I switched install attempts between Lite and stock regular several times, finally got one to succeed with xorg and beyond.  here is the date of that re-install with stock vsido. now another python change in its history. An excuse for blather, thanks for the pointer to stat birth:date fun.   2019-10-31 11:26:51
mail, apt, and dpkg logs begin that date 10-31., so i think that is it. (?)

Thank you for vsido.

Runs as smooth as anything ever has IMO ... everything I want to work does

Golf game has never been better... I am striping the ball and making putts, beating anyone who is up to the challenge

I also walked 27 holes yesterday and got better as the day went on.. That may not sound like much but at 61, it is a task and I am feeling great walking 12 miles while doing something I love

What's up in your world RatMan?

Not too much. Still manage to get out and go fishing every now and then. Been going to spots in Georgia for spring break trips. Oldest daughter hauled in a 40+ pound black drum last time we were near the coast. Hauled it in on 8 pound line.

Summer vacation right around the corner now. But the big news is that DOE will be bringing people back on site for work so the wife will not have to work from home any more.

Pretty much painless. Dual booting with ArchLabs. Did not have spacefm installed in ArchLabs so installed from the command line.

(https://i.ibb.co/sQwFFRY/vsido-003.png) (https://ibb.co/tcsbbKr)

In the process of configuring. Added jgmenu, revamped conky and tint2. Re-configuring for Debian commands (what is this thing called apt?  :D)

Post by: PackRat on September 06, 2022, 01:25:25 AM
The install had spacefm. No issues there. I used nmtui and connected to wireless no issue.

I did not have spacefm installed with ArchLabs (I think it's in the AUR). So I couldn't follow the installation HowTo. It's a straight forward command in the terminal to restore the archive so i just installed from the command line while logged into ArchLabs.

Currently dual-booting with ArchLabs.

Install w3m and w3m-img and you can replace that penguin with your VSIDO logo icon  :D

Everything works out of the box installing from the fsarchive file. Had to manually reset my time zone to US Eastern instead of Central. Easy fix.

Fluxbox on dual monitors. Since fluxbox, like openbox, just expands the desktop across the two monitors, there is some empty space at the bottom the second monitor.  I tried the:

Configure --> Toolbar --> On Head... --> All Heads

from the Fluxbox Menu, but didn't really like it set up that way. So added a simple, one line conky to the bottom of the second monitor for a bit of symmetry.

Aesthetically, it would probably look better with a tint2 panel and slightly rounded corners.

Edit - With some effort, this could look really good. Matching up the colors-transparency-widths will take some time and patience. Every piece of software calculates it differently. Or just go opaque.

Wow PackRat love the dual monitor setup!  Still experimenting away.  This time it's an Lenovo Thinkpad 'Yoga' Ultrabook with fully functioning touchscreen and tablet capabilities!  Boots in around 4 seconds flat.  Using the latest .fsa download, "installed" with nary an issue...

(https://i.postimg.cc/3d3mcgH6/vsido-2022-10-06.png) (https://postimg.cc/3d3mcgH6)

edit: very small and thin ultrabook, screen folds all the way around to become a tablet when needed.  I believe a 12.9 inch screen, around the same size as my 2019 iPad Pro 12.9"...

This ultrabook is small but what a powerful little computer when loaded with VSIDO Linux.  Touchscreen as well!  I just had to figure out the new screen as far as font sizes since you needed a microscope to read or see anything.

ok so not much new to see, oh wait that is the new 6.0 linux kernel there!!!

(https://i.postimg.cc/JGzKLdNN/vsido-also-current.png) (https://postimg.cc/JGzKLdNN)

No drop-down terminal hiding the conky displaying the current kernel as well...

(https://i.postimg.cc/Js6dBCq4/vsido-alsostill-current.png) (https://postimg.cc/Js6dBCq4)

Turned out less difficult than I had imagined.  Hours in the compiling though along with a significant amount of disc space needed for the operation as well.  Anyway, it's official the Linux Kernel is now in the 6's...

Jedi do you sense the disturbance in the force?   ;)
Don't worry it's me.

Can you try this clock, actually two clocks, I made this summer.
They are very similar one is with Gtk3 the other Xlib.

They have command line options like yad.

Sorry it took so long.  Had to wait for 'time' to pass by so I could tell how the new kernel is working here.  Been up almost 2 days no issues, so far...  (the laptop's been up almost 2 days not me!)

I sense a deep disturbance in this entire spiral of our galaxy!  ???  Are these clock conkies you speak of? As I infer at the start of this post, 'time' is observed here poorly as it interferes with specificity in precision observation.  ::)  :D  :D omg so much smoke...

I actually only have a conky on my screen because it comes by default with VSIDO and does show some good info easily.  Other than that one liner up there that's been around a decade or more, I've lost my conky vision.  Life happened and I'm living the dream baby!

I am going to look but no promises!

Hey misko! As jedi said, glad to see you here again.. I will check out the clocks..

I am also curious if you or anyone has found any gmail notify scripts that work.. GMail made some changes that has stopped any atom attempts to capture data, you simply can no longer get it even though credentials still work

Just curious

I've done the same thing myself over the years in hopes of better KDE understanding.  Alas, I've never achieved enlightenment status with it and always end up right back at Fluxbox myself!

So the 'old' MSI lappy is back and a little worn with age.  Having to use 2 different keyboards currently as the beautiful steel series multicolor keyboard on the laptop decided to stop letting me use the 'x' 'z' and 'Ctrl' keys.  Not sure if something is up or just old age...
Otherwise, this is going to be the new media machine for the house and my new VSIDO goto piece of metal...
Got it up and running using the latest .fsa file available.  Quite the round-about install this time.  UEFI still sucks imo.  Anyway, I was able to successfully get here in the end and thats what matters!!!

Hello Everyone
The previous screenshot is method one practice onto a mini mini spinning usb drive 8G. familiarize with the method one using a live system to install vsido img, in that case the entire 8G[7.3.]
Second trial method one onto a hdd, as suggested, using small partition for the compressed vsido archived file. started with an hdd having a vsido installation on the entire drive. made small partition. wiped vsido 2017. let remain the swap partition. unpack from small partition to vsido partition. The two trials were aimed for clean ext4 partiton,, though, to make double sure,, was added to the fsarchiver string -o overwrite and ,mkfs=ext4.  no hitches. Both times. Did that do double work? or double sure(?) sure is quiet without the -v.
Get it booted up once and update, lucky enough, upgrades grub and kernel. all set. wireless too, but it is wired.

connman gtk shows an icon top-right,but it does not need to run; the tray icon can be off.
using style garnet with the active/inactive colors reversed.

I like to annoy distros and change them a bit.
I added JGmenu, MX Linux repos, magic corners(bl-hotcorners-python3 -d
), xfdashboard, ulauncher, lightpad.

How did the installation go?

EHM!

Step One JGmenu... ala Vit

sudo apt uppdate && sudo apt install jgmenu && jgmenu_run init --theme=archlabs_1803 && jgmenu_run init --apply-gtktheme && sed -i 's/position_mode        = fixed/position_mode        = pointer/g' ~/.config/jgmenu/jgmenurc &&  sed -i 's/font                 = Ubuntu 12px/font                 = Ubuntu 16px/g' ~/.config/jgmenu/jgmenurc

then add to tint2conf

Step Two Add MX 23 repo... need for xfdashboard

wget https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/m/mx23-archive-keyring/mx23-archive-keyring_2023.6.6_all.deb && sudo apt install ./mx23-archive-keyring_2023.6.6_all.deb && echo "deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/ bookworm main non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mxlinux.list && echo -e "Package: *\nPin: release a=mx\nPin-Priority: 100" | sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/mxlinux && sudo apt update && sudo apt install mx-packageinstaller
Step Tree Hot corners with xfdashboard

mkdir ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/

echo "[Hot Corners]" > ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "top_left_corner_command = xfdashboard" >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "top_right_corner_command = " >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "bottom_left_corner_command = " >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "bottom_right_corner_command = " >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "polling_interval = 0.4" >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "corner_delay = 0.2" >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc
echo "bounce_distance = 40" >>  ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc

sudo apt install python3-xlib wmctrl xdotool xfdashboard && wget https://github.com/capn-damo/scripts/raw/master/bl-hotcorners-python3 -P /tmp && chmod +x /tmp/bl-hotcorners-python3 && sudo mv /tmp/bl-hotcorners-python3 /usr/local/bin/ && echo -e "\n\n\t now add bl-hotcorners-python3 -d to autostart\n\n"

Step Four Ulauncher (for Ubuntu)

wget https://launchpad.net/~agornostal/+archive/ubuntu/ulauncher/+files/ulauncher_5.15.3-0ubuntu1ppa1~lunar_all.deb && sudo apt install ./ulauncher*.deb
Then add ulauncher & to ~/.fluxbox/startup

Step Five lightpad (another program search)

wget https://github.com/libredeb/lightpad/releases/download/v0.0.8/lightpad_0.0.8.rev1_amd64.deb && sudo apt install ./lightpad*.deb
My ~/.config/bl-hotcorners/bl-hotcornersrc (xdotool key super+d is for iconize window... not default)

[Hot Corners]
top_left_corner_command = xfdashboard -t
top_right_corner_command = com.github.libredeb.lightpad
bottom_left_corner_command = ulauncher-toggle
bottom_right_corner_command = xdotool key super+d
polling_interval = 0.2
corner_delay = 0.2
bounce_distance = 40

Good luck!

Meh, it is all in the end users hands and I believe our target audience is those that have been around the block a few times .. At the same time we are also aware that any user wanting to use this one (or any distro) can have a forum and several decades of expertise to help with anything. Me personally, I have always believed SID to be maligned as the problem child when in reality it is as good as anything that a good backup can restore

Clearly you don't know the laziness of users accustomed to "either everything works perfectly or it's crap" as I do. When I think of who gave me a headache because the desktop background and the color of the icons had changed, I still feel bad today.

And if it comes to using the terminal it takes Einstein or Iron Man of your choice, and that all this is within the reach of normal people seems impossible to him.

Think I know people who call the technician to push the antivirus button. And I said it all.

The installation of VSIDO is the simplest ever seen, a command in the terminal is enough, provided you indicate the right image and the right partition in which to write it and then a grub, which can be from another distribution already installed, or chroot-rescue-scan from MX Linux, to enter the partition and manage it.

I was thinking about "How to use MX Linux to install VSIDO in 4 steps" It seems to me much easier than it takes to install Debian... yet it succeeds to many.

Hello PackRat and VastOne and hakerdefo and everyone
Anyone do wofi?
I have worked my options to wofi command, wofi -n -i -O alphabetical -S drun,run

The scrot select hole Option is interesting.
Having put it on a Launcher, use got me accustomed to the dual selections.

scrot 1.10-1
has a new default for .png screencapture.
The pmss screenshooter tool uses scrot png default;
so no change is necessary for the pmss script to work, but
the v.1.10 default png is a smaller file than previous default.
Not necessary but optional values, the scrot commands are the Options,
for my options,
for every line that is a scrot command is made the following changes for using pmss scrot options .
/usr/local/bin/pmss

where-ever is scrot found in pmss:
Added the --compression value for png as -Z 1
Any -c where there is no -d i took out the -c
i don't believe in -b; took out the -b
In the scrot Entire screen shot
is substituted imlib2_grab just because it can;
i do like the cursor in full desktop shots, so
that imlib will likely become scrot with pointer and delay options.
Looking into the pmss script is really a treat. Thanks.

In /pmss function upload_check, did an option (?)
on line 138
to the end of the line added a "&" character, key ampersand
xdg-open "${NAME}" &

I created the xdgmenumaker 2.1 deb package which allows you to have the dynamic menu, and with some tricks in your own language.

This is my ~/.fluxbox/menu now

# to use your own menu, copy this to ~/.fluxbox/menu, then edit
# ~/.fluxbox/init and change the session.menuFile path to ~/.fluxbox/menu

Subtle changes to conky and the GMusicBrowser Desktop Widget Plugin

Been without wheels for a couple of weeks so I am in tweak mode. Attached is the latest widget for GMB, just save it in your ~/.config/gmuscibrowser/layouts directory and then load it from the Plugins/Desktop Widgets in the settings of GMB

Been using Wayland compositors the last couple of weeks.

Sway - i3 clone for Wayland. I mostly use i3 these days so sway would be the natural switch should Void (or I) make a full time switch to Wayland.

labwc - for those that prefer the openbox/fluxbox style of window management, labwc is an openbox clone (developed by jgmenu developer malm). Waybar for the system inforamtion panel:

Both are stable and fairly easy to configure. Most i3 and openbox configuration settings are supported. I don't think Xorg is going away any time soon, but it's nice to have some familiar Wayland compositors to use.

After updating I lost the graphical login. (lxdm-greeter-gtk?) My dubious and not very diligent work-around was to hit a tty and grabbed lightdm  ???
Anyway it worked and voila VSIDO is STILL 'the One'!

All that uptime...  Oh well up to date VSIDO and all that goes with it is so awesome to me!  Thanks everyone and you know who you are!!!

Welcome back Jedi!

There was an issue with lxdm that riV and I worked on and fixed here. (https://vsido.org/index.php/topic,1512.0.html) On that thread is the fix and files to get lxdm working again. Please PM me or post there if you need anything more to get lxdm working, I happen to like it a lot better than lightdm.

95 days of uptime! Your update must have been a beast too.. I am glad to see you are here and active old friend

Trying out kitra (kde app like gimp)

KDE6 just released; should hit the Void repos at the end of March. Might already be in Sid. Runs really smooth in Wayland and X11.

I hear you like wayland/hyprland?

What I use here, heh big list. In short: Hyprland with waybar + "stuff"
Terminal is kitty, shell is zsh with "Oh My Zsh" script installed :)

Anything else, just ask :)

No Xorg or Pulseaudio was hurt in the progress :P
