Side note - the Xfce image viewer ristretto will not open the saved images - error states that it is not a jpeg file, starts with 0x89 0x50. Images open fine in firefox and geeqie.

Your observation is correct! A few image viewers failed to open images downloaded by pmxkcd. It happens because of a bug first reported in 2007 and guess what?, it is still open!
eog does not sniff mime type (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=490067)
I have updated pmxkcd to fix this issue! Thanks again RatMan!

although, hit and miss if ristretto will open the image (claims it's not a png image)- although it will show them all as thumbnails; geeqie opened them all no issues.
