All,
I just did 'apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade' which I have been holding off for over a week. I have watched a number of bugs pop up and several be addressed with fixes, and the others I just applied 'apt-mark hold'. It pulled in the new kernel (4.0), though, per Packrat's post about corruption of ext4, I have not loaded that kernel. Everything seems to work except my sound. No sound output either from headphones or speakers. Alsamixer lets me change sound levels, but does not see a sound card (via F6), even though pre-update it did. So I am trying to figure out how to get sound back. Output below indicates I have drivers installed, but, the soundcard itself is not recognized? I read through other user groups for advice, but none specific to this recent stretch update.
Just to let you know, I apt-mark hold iceweasel, in part because of a gstreamer bug. Not sure if that matters.

It strikes me that something about the sound card may have moved into the kernel, and all the other apps updated at the same time as the kernel, but I haven't loaded the new kernel yet. Could this be the case?

I have an HP laptop as well, I think the module that needs to load is snd_hda_intel.
Do you get sound from a live CD session? If so, you can boot from that just to verify the card is still working.

I have not booted from live cd yet. Let me shutdown and boot into my other install, Lubuntu, and I can report back.

So, the update in Debian .... removed my sound card ...???
Computer say no.
I am guessing on my vanilla stretch install there is a driver or dependency missing which is required to sense the soundcard. I just don''t know what it is. Know what is missing from my stretch?
In Lubuntu, I played music and streamed radio without issue. I updated grub as well. And then shutdown -h now.
Boot into Debian, and ... wait not into x just yet!! In tty, where I generally boot to, I thought, well heck let me see if I can stream or play local from CLI.

Whaaaat? I have literally done nothing aside from update grub. Um. Scratches head and thanks Packrat for entertaining me. Hopefully I will be more entertaining next time. Incidentally, automatically loaded the new linux kernel ... 4.0.0-1 installed from Debian sid repos. Maybe that was the issue, soundcard drivers kernelized?
The above portion was in my first xsession. I have been playing around with multiple window managers and have edited my xinitrc and xsession files and found errors. So edited, then killed x, then came back. Prior to killing x, I was streaming music. After killing x then restarting cwm, no streaming, no audio.
Perplexed.
It sounds like you might have the "two sound cards" issue I have to deal with on my desktop.
In your Lubuntu install, jf you go into alsamixer, are there two or more choices with the select sound card option? If so, your Debian install is not registering the card.
This is a pretty easy fix. I'm on my phone right now, I'll post a link after I take my daughter to school. It's a link for skackware, but works on Debian.

Packrat, thanks for the feedback. So, why would I be able to play local audio files and stream internet radio in tty, but similar attempts fail in x? Weird.

which led me on a short goose chase and then to issue

No errors, but looks like the sound driver is not loaded ... when I am in x ... ??? How does sound play when in tty though?
Could it be Colonel Mustard in the Billiard Room with a spanner?
I did a search of "sound in tty no sound in X" and got a bunch of results. Appears to be a pulseaudio issue. Including no permission to use the sound device in X.
You using pulseaudio or did you switch to alsa?
If you're using pulseaudio, there appears to be some quick fixes using systemctl commands. Repeat the search and see which matches up wuth your issue. Some people actually filed bug reports on it.

Now that you mention your search, it occurs to me that I was using unbubble to search. I went to google and got a lot more search results.
Incidentally, reading through some of them, I should mention I do not have lightdm. I start x from tty via 'xinit xxx', having edited my .xsession to reflect a bunch of different wm's. According this post (http://superuser.com/questions/768622/sound-does-not-work-on-x-server-works-in-tty-arch-linux-w-alsa) alsa must be started by the display manager, kdm on his system, and I assume lightdm for non-KDE environments, both of which have to be started with systemd. I have neither lightdm nor kdm. I don't want no damn dm. I do have systemd. In that respect, my system is the same pre-4.0 (ie, 3.16) and post-4.0, on both I have systemd but not lightdm. But it makes me wonder, what has changed with systemd with this most recent kernel upgrade? or is it merely the kernel change?
I might have to reconfigure alsa-base via 'dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base' (http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Sound_not_working) or an alternative might be to use 'dkms' to automatically reconfigure alsa each time I update my kernel (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS). I think this alsa issue is identical to the one described here (http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/64259/start-icewm-from-the-command-line-and-get-sound-working) (which is actually a pleasurable read for me since I love doing junk in terminal and the ixtmixilix kinda rants and I love it.
So for now, this is a housekeeping post. I'll report back after researching which method is the best and implementing it.
