WM Designs and Discussions / Re: FluxBox Slit

The apps file accepts wildcards

from memory so check my syntax -

[app] (class=*)
        [DECO]   {BORDER}
        [Layer]    {2}
[end]

Will cause every app to only display a border as window decorations (for that evilwm aesthetic) and put all apps on layer 2.

Be careful with it though, apps like fbrun need to be above other apps to work properly - you may cause some problems because any opened app will want to be above the existing apps - I don't know if Layer 2 works the way Layer 8 works in that regard.

What are you trying to accomplish (I forget what the default behavior is suppose to be)?

but the combination -

panel_layer = bottom
panel_strut_policy = follow_size

in the tint2rc I used for a pager with a system tray, will reserve space for the tint2 bar and doesn't effect the system tray on my set up.

Looks like X may be in the process of getting upgraded.

There are a lot of -dev listed, do you build some apps from source that require those? Maybe dependencies for the spacefm build process?

Add/Change in your tint2rc -

panel_dock = 1

to put tint2 in the fluxbox slit (dock). That should keep it visible when you iconify everything to show the desktop. In the fluxbox configuration menu, configure the slit to be where you want your tint2 taskbar to be - bottom left looks like in your screenshot.

You'll may only be able to do this with one tint2 configuration so the tint2 panel with the systray and battery meter will get iconified - you can try putting them both in the slit and see if they auto resize or something.

Probably want to start yourself a general help fluxbox thread and move out of the feedback section at this point.

I have a wife and two kids; my ears are always burning    ;D

Otherwise, no problem, thank you for providing the community with VSIDO and the forum.

back on topic; after two years or so, a new version of jwm was released last week:

Never really gave this wm a go; but it's light and snappy. If I can figure out how to manipulate window resize and move incrementally with key bindings I may keep it around for a while.

Configuration and theme are done in a single configuration file in xml format (like openbox) and default is to have a button on the tray for "show desktop" (ew's ears are burining now   :D)

@PackRat

That`s fine. I haven`t got that far yet. I`m working on appearance and functionality, trying to get the tint2 and the menus, as I want them. But there were so many tint2-configs in the system that I got a bit confused, But now it`s kind of sorted out. Except adjusting which layers the different windows and panels should belong to, in order to give me the result that I want :D The next thing is to figure out how Show/Toggle desktop works in fluxbox :)

To show desktop add this key binding to ~/.fluxbox/keys:

Mod4 F12 :ToggleCmd {ShowDesktop} {DeIconify all originquiet}               # Mod4 is the Win key on my laptop

Mod4 + F12 will switch (Toggle) betwenn ShowDesktop and DeIconify all; change "Mod4 F12" to whatever key binding you want to use, leave the rest as is. As far as I know you can TooleCmd through as many commands (scripts) as you want - for example, I think you'd be able to cycle through 6 conky configurations/layouts if you wanted to.

Here are the all the various commands for key bindings - http://fluxbox-wiki.org/index.php?title=Keyboard_shortcuts#Currently_Focused_Window_Commands
The fluxbox wiki is pretty good.

1366x768 laptop resolution:

I'm thinking that the height/width are not independent of one another, set one and the other calculated - set appropriate one depending on if the panel will be horizontal or vertical. Had to remember that it's an icon embedded in a task button - text hidden in this scenario - not an icon, so the maximum available icon size is selected based on the height/width, panel width, and paddings.

General Support / Large Icons, tint2 configuration
January 17, 2014, 12:15:10 AM
Was setting up tint2 as a pager of sorts -

one issue I'm having is getting larger icons. I tried setting different panel widths and paddings, but the icons weren't expanding in the vertical. Am I missing something obvious? I was trying to get 48x48 icons.

Edit - never mind, figured it out.

Pertinent section -

Quotetask_maximum_size = width height
        width is used with horizontal panel. width = 0 to get full taskbar width
        height is used with vertical panel

was misinterpreting how that worked.

It's actually a nice app.

You can theme/configure it from the command line or set defaults in .Xresources.

Still messing around. Have tint2 set up as icons only so it acts as a pager/icon box of sorts:

@jed - nice!

Messing around - swapped out conky for xosview - one of those lesser known apps. xfce4-terminal with no titlebar, scrollbar:

QuoteFluxbox isn`t all that much to learn. But the config are a bit different from openbox. In openbox I pretty much did everything in menu.xml and rc.xml. Flux has other config-files, like that apps-file and the keys-file. It isn`t a steap learning curve, but it requires a tiny bit of effort, and the worst thing about being a Crunchbanger, is that #! makes you way to comfortable and lazy.

If you're more comfortable with fewer config files, the fluxbox menu, keys, and apps file can be combined into one file - i.e ConfigFluxbox - just keep the sections discrete and edit the ~/.fluxbox/init file to source that file for the menu, key bindings, and per-app settings.

The menu and apps settings will still auto-update, but you still need to restart fluxbox for changes to the key bindings to work.

I've never tried to add in the overlay, slitlist, or windowmenu file to a master config - don't use those too often.

Thanks. Will look into that as soon as I start to configure the install. Initially I will probably try to do it with the config-files as they are now, and see if I could get used to it. But it nice to know that i can merge the config-files into a master config.

I take it back - combining these files is a bad idea. Worked yesterday; fluxbox is hanging today.

General Support / Re: init file for fluxbox slit
January 16, 2014, 02:16:43 PM
^ that's the entire init file for fluxbox.

this is the file that controls the windows in the slit -

session.slitlistFile: ~/.fluxbox/slitlist

in a terminal -

man fluxbox | grep -A5 slitlist

will give you the details

The slit has it's own parameters that can be added to any fluxbox style.
