^ Brilliant... Simply awesome
Thanks for sharing that... Your daughter is a beauty and has a great dad, well done sir.. well done
Thanks
Forgot to mention that on our first trip to the lake, my youngest caught her first fish ever - with some help from mom.

You are indeed a lucky man!!!
^
Second jedi's PackRat. A lovely day out with a lovely family.
It is indeed what life is all about!
Thanks, all.
Thats fantastic! I dont have kids but I have a nephew that I take fishing every time he is here. Its very cool to see how excited kids get.
Bad day fishing better than a good day working -

;)
How true, how true!
^^ Great scrot Rat Man!
Catching bait for a bigger one? :P
I wish.
We are now after our nemesis - I had something big hit a good sized lure last Friday, and the wife had something big break her line on Sunday in the same area of the lake. Got a decent look at what broke my wife's line - saw about 18 inches of the back of what appears to be a muskie or pickerel.
Problem is, this is the first time I've fished in the SE USA (been here 2 years). I am use to fly fishing for trout, steelhead, or salmon. Haven't done any bass or pike fishing since I left Minnesota back in 2007.
So it's game on.
Went back to the lake to try and land the big one.
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/f1500.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/f1500.php)
Too much wind knocking down by casts so I was ending up about 20 meters short of his domain. Managed to land a 8 inch perch and 8 inch crappie but tossed them back. Using a simple jig and single hook all day.
I need a boat!
Fished San Clemente island for two days. Bite was slow but I ended up with a couple Yellowfin, two skipjack and two big bonita.
25lb yellowfin on a heavy bass rod..... just because I can :D

You catch it? Or it catch you?
Nice one!
Wow man, that is some nice fishing! Good for you... 8)
Now fishing season is over and your expected to be putting in your 8 hours on the IRC like the rest of us!!! hehehe :D
Looks like you had a good time!!! :)
Thanks guys!
@ VastOne
Its a fine line between who catches who :D
I have this overwhelming urge to fish the lightest line I can get away with and it doesnt always turn out well lol.
@ Jedi
Who says fishing season ever ends? Theres always something to set a hook on! ;D
Nice catch !
Some good eatin" coming up soon 8)
Wow, that is impressive. My fishing is limited to the tank in front of my favorite restaurant on Phuket.
^ he hehe he hehe ... he said Phucket he hehe hehe (Beavis or Butthead)
Nice one.
Is that a baitcast reel? How do you like it? This is the first year I've ever used one, not fully use to it yet.
nice catch .. That is a few weeks of food right there.
Thanks everyone!
@ packrat
Yes sir, it's an Abu Garcia revo toro nacl 50hs. It's a baitcaster that is intended for saltwater. It's sealed so that the salt doesn't destroy the inside of the reel.
I absolutely love the reel and think it's worth every penny. For bigger fish you just don't have the same power with a spinner.
What reel did you buy? I have a few different models but I swear by the Abu Garcia offshore/revo Toro and daiwa lexa. Both are just amazing.
It's a Lew's. Just getting use to casting it. Starting to like it.
Tried a new lake today; had a pretty good day:

^ That is all around awesome... Well done! 8)
What is out there in the middle of the fog? A fountain?
Very nice PackRat! Love the pictures!
Lews makes a good product. Ive never used their reels but my brother had a red speedstick and I liked it a lot.
Yep, there is a fountain in the lake. Could see the bass coming and hitting the surface right past the edge of ripples caused by the fountain, but they were not biting anything today. Crappie in the morning and perch in the afternoon.
@lwfits - it's a pretty low end reel; but the wife and the oldest are all in with the fishing so I can see some upgrades coming. Wife snapped my rod in half the other day (one of has to watch the youngest while the other fishes), and my oldest broke the tip off another one - which I could fix. I am going to have to give a seminar on "What to do when you get hung up on snags/rocks" .

Sorry to butt in but this made me rofl. If you are successful with your training let me know I have an 86 year old father and 25 year old daughter that have many years of training and very little in learning ... but they love to fish and I won't discourage them. One of the few things my Pop still really enjoys. If you can videotape that "seminar" bet you could sell a few thousand copies! Great pics and even though I am not doing much fishing these days am vicariously enjoying the stories.
(http://s10.postimg.org/84ww1ooxx/Resized_Image_1413553975964.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/84ww1ooxx/) - one of the smaller turtles.
(http://s10.postimg.org/6r9uk4f2d/Resized_Image_1413719069099.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/6r9uk4f2d/) - a big ol' crappie
Very nice RatMan.. That crappie looks big enough to be a small mouth!!!
That's what I thought it was (and what my wife thought she hooked). The youngest and I are actually home recovering today, when I saw the picture I thought they had a nice sized bass, but noticed the head was a bit wrong. Figured it was a catfish of some sort and my daughter was covering the whiskers. As big a crappie as I've ever seen.
Wife made some gumbo out of the other crappie and blue gill we've caught this summer, yum.
Love the pictures Packrat! I dont have kids but I take my nephew out every other weekend. I get almost as much enjoyment out of watching him catch fish as when I do...... almost!
Another day another lake - nothing big biting today; caught a few mid-size bluegill in the creek:
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/img156220.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/img156220.php) (http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/img156018.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/img156018.php)
a bit of extra adventure today though:
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/img155922.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/img155922.php)
^ Perfect.. the pink rod your daughter is using is damned cool! 8)
She's becoming quite the expert. The bass and crappie weren't biting so she suggested we go to the creek for some bluegill just to get some action. Second cast she found the school and we slayed them for a couple hours. She caught 7 and I caught 1 - and I've been hearing about ever since. She and mom are heading out bass - and hopefully that big muskie - tomorrow.
^ Perfect! She has all of my blessings to beat the crap out of you in catching the best of it all! I lub it...
Let me know how you all do!
Wife caught this one -
(http://s23.postimg.org/xrhehcikn/IMG_20141130_122826_722.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/xrhehcikn/)
perch were biting today as well.
^ Nice... The only fishing I will be doing for at least 5 months will be in a shanty with an auger and a saw to cut the ice
Remember to tie a rope to your auger and lash it to something. The very definition of a sinking feeling when it breaks through the ice and slips out of your numb fingers.
VastOne Im totally down for some ice fishing! Kinda hard to do when its 80 degrees in December though ::)
Haven't gone for a couple weeks and I think I'm going through withdrawals!
Heres a couple new pics

Fished 4lb on an 8 foot Fenwick rod rated 2-6lb. Love this rod cuz it bends all the way into the handle!
Landed her first catfish the other day - I need to get her going on bass & muskie fishing :D

4 Total - Mom caught 3 of them:

She is a real cutie!!!
Now that should make for a nice feed!!! Some nice looking catfish!
What weird looking fishes you have around there :P
I used to fish a lot when I was a kid. Now i only do it occasionally if I have the chance to go north to my homeland on summer holidays. We use to spend evenings fishing in family. But never in a river. Always in the sea. Nicer looking swimning bugs there.
Most likely get our salt water licences this spring. Looking forward to some clamming.
You cannot find clams in beaches in Northern Spain anymore. Only in protected areas. Mussels at most... But not recommended to eat them unless fully depurated.
Watched a few fishing videos on youtube tonight and stumbled upon this one
Pyramid Lake 11 19 2014 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-oh3JpA1RM#)
Totally forgot I was being recorded lol
Nice.
Pyramid Lake, Nevada? Went there several times when I lived in Reno.
Very nice Luke thanks for sharing that buddy
@ PackRat, sorry for the late response, this was actually at Pyramid lake in Ca. About an hour north of Los Angeles
Im glad so many people here enjoy fishing. Ive been a true fishing addict sice I was very young and I cant see that ending any time soon.
Decided to brave the cold front and head to the lake because the striped bass have been biting all week.
Totally skunked, but a good 3-4 hours of solitude; pretty much had the lake to myself.
Pretty sure that muskie - or possibly a gar - sheared my line again; 20lb test this time. Have to rig up something that will hold that s.o.b.
^ Solitude is heavenly.... the older I get the more I crave it
You using good leaders when dealing with fish with teeth?
That's what I need is some heavy leaders.
Usually out there fishing for bass and crappie, but I think the apex predator in this cove is a 3-4 foot gar or muskie. Seems to hang out about 60-80 feet or so right off the pier. With no wind I can hit his spot with a small-mid size jig. I need to set up a stronger lead though; haven't done this kind of fishing since I left Minnesota in 1987 - fishing for northern pike using rubber duckies as bait.
The wife and daughter have told me a smaller gar has made it's home just below the pier and patrols the shoreline. May have to rethink my whole strategy for fishing this cove.
Still too use to fly fishing in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada when I was living in Reno.
Speaking of which, my fly rod sheared in two the other day - just old and brittle - so i need to put a new one of those on the list.

Boy thats the truth! I dont fish alone much anymore but I used to and it was fantastic. For me theres nothing better than putting in headphones and walking a beach throwing lures.
@ PackRat
Try using florocarbon leaders. Florocarbon is invisible underwater unlike mono and you could up your line weight without sacrificing how much your catching. Also florocarbon is more resilient to abrasion and teeth.
Went out yesterday with some friends to kill a yellowtail or two. Landed one, handed one off to a friend to fight and broke off three or four.
We had a slight sprinkle until around 130pm when it really started coming down and we decided to head back.

Wow... nice ones there lwfitz..
Those fun to fight and haul in? How long of a fight?
You got a little bloody too... just from the fish? What do you do with the fish also?
Thanks buddy!
They are extremely fun to fish. They hit hard and run for the rocks so generally heavy line and an even heavier drag is recommended.
The first one I got was on a reel with 300 yards of 50lb braid (thickness of 12lb) and a 20lb florocarbon leader. That fish weighed about 25lbs and almost spooled me before I got him stopped and then it took about 25 min to land after that.
The second fish I hooked was on a heavier setup with 50lb braid and a 30lb leader. This fish stripped off 200 yards of line in about 30 seconds and took 20 min to land.
Yellowtail fight hard and are extremely smart. They run for rocks/reefs/kelp, anything that they can break you off in.
Like tuna its necessary to bleed the fish before it dies to keep the quality of the meat good. It wouldnt make you sick if you didnt bleed it but it wont taste very good. unfortunately this means that blood gets everywhere.
My customers love me. I supply many of them with fresh or fresh frozen (vacuum sealed) fish. Far better than anything youll get from a restaurant or the grocery store. Then what I dont give away I get to eat lol
Bass fishing in the swamplands along the Santee River:
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/santee.png) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/santee.php)
Fished down in Colonet Mexico with some friends last weekend and decided to take the GoPro with me
^ Epic stuff... at 6:25, who is the guy? Looks like an actor I have seen on several shows
Glad you enjoyed it! Ive been fishing every second that Im not working for the last year and a half expecting the season to come to an end but it just isnt happening.
at 6:25 thats Pete. He has two lazy eyes and the only way to sneak up on him is to walk directly at him lol
^ that is the beauty of it all.. the memories and friends
Glad you are enjoying it buddy!
Too much fun.
Need to get my ass back out there now that it's warming up.
Spring Break fishing trip on the Santee River. Rigging up to get a large stripped bass prowling the edge of the cypress trees. The wife is in full blown Captain Ahab mode so this could get interesting. Photos soon.
Nice... hope to see C Ahab get her way!
Came close. She was using a small sunfish my oldest caught as bait and had her rod secured to a tree while I stayed at the lake casting. I heard him breach and saw the ripples at the furthest edge of the cypress. 30 seconds later, her line goes taught and starts to spool out. Damn fish took off; crossed my line and went into the cypress roots. By the time I cut my line free, and the wife got hers out of the cypress he had stolen the bait.
Some pics -

Great pics Mr RatMan... that is one awesome Black Crappie! Well done eldest!
According to the park ranger, it is most likely a gar prowling the edge of the cypress. Switched to some metal leads today, but too windy with the thunderstorms passing through the area, nothing biting.
Only catch of the day -

Had a nice long weekend, Thursday thru Monday, scheduled to fish the Islands but got blown out so I cruised up to Lake Casitas and caught a few crappie

@lwfitz, GREAT crappies man!
@ Mr RatMan, awesome picture!
Out today in Wisconsin, my favorite place to fish... Have not fished there in 18 years. My favorite to fish for are smallies and walleyes... No smallies today but I did catch my first walleye in 18 years also.
We also saw a Bald Eagle come extremely close to us and the water, that was pretty cool

checked out the local falls; nice change after a some 2 pound bass jumped off their hooks.
Wow! Nice pics PackRat! Almost looks like Maine...
^ That lake is where the Appalachians come through the Carolinas into Georgia. My wife and oldest are still there; I came back with the youngest to do all the school registration.
She says she had a 4-pound bass (mostly small mouth) break her line yesterday just as she had him at the surface. I would have taken partial credit if she had landed it since I told her to go out on this little used dock at the other end of the park instead of fishing from shore by the cabin.
But since she lost it, it's all on her :P She knows when it comes in for dinner though, so she better go back for it tonight.
Wife has been on a roll this week -

Very impressive! She's a little cutie and can fish as well! You must be a pretty proud papa!
Annual, summer fishing vacation this week. (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/devilsfork/introduction.aspx)
Nice and warm early summer.
Fairly easy to do when the rocks are angular:

Off to a rough start - just about done with baitcast reels, but it has become a quest to master this thing:

Ended up keeping one smallmouth bass and mid-sized sunfish for chow tomorrow. Also had a pounder sunfish, but he jumped out of the bucket.
Switched it up and went fishing for trout -
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/p10304158.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/p10304158.php)
My kind of fishing - how I miss my fly rod!
Pointed out a couple spots and we caught/released a couple 6-8 inch pan fries. No trout after that though - too hot. Caught and released a 6-inch catfish.
PackRat Im headed up to Mammoth, CA (https://goo.gl/maps/XvXs82VLi382) for some trout fishing next Friday night until Wednesday

That will be a nice trip. Use to go into Northern California - Frenchman Lake and Sierra Buttes - for trout fishing when I lived in Reno.
^ Very cool! I havent fished Frenchman in a long time. Do you still live in that area?
Nope; living out in South Carolina these days. Bass, catfish, and crappie fishing these days. Not much in the way of trout or fly fishing.
Oldest got a salt-resistant rod and reel last year for birthday #10, still need to make it back to the coast and break that one in. I'd like to head out to Beaufort and do some clamming/oyster digging while we're at it. Alligators are a bit to numerous for that though when you have to keep one eye on the kids as well.
Break in the weather (until the end of the week when hurricane Mathew gets here) as Autumn arrives - some nice Indian Summer weather; best time in the SE USA as far as I'm concerned:

^ that is really really awesome RatMan.. great kids doing a great thing resulting in great pix
Thanks for sharing!
@PackRat
Your daughters are very beautiful! Better that you have them fishing than playing with computers or video games. If only all parents were like you. Most kids today are raised by a 'screen'. Memories like the ones your making with them, priceless. They'll always look back at these moments and really treasure their father!
They do the video game thing too - but it's easy enough to get them out and about.
We'll be heading to Musgrove Mill State Park (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/musgrovemill/introduction.aspx) for our First Day hike. First Day hikes are a Park Service promotional to get people out and about - preferably at a State Park - after over eating on the holidays. We did Rivers Bridge last year. (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/riversbridge/introduction.aspx)
Spring break begins in about 2 hours .......
This year it happens to coincide with another popular event in the area ..... (http://www.pga.com/news/masters/2017-masters-tournament-field-list)
Going to be some serious mayhem; good time to be going fishing.
I DVR every second of coverage of the Masters to watch when the sun goes down and then go fish and golf my ass off...
I have found a massive amount of new spots to fish very close to where I live .. had no idea they were even there and looking forward to really getting to know them
They are chutes .. do not know why they are called that, off the Mississippi River.. they are basically the boarder between Missouri and Kentucky.. and a lot like inter-coastal waters in Florida
I am looking for a kayak or small canoe to really get to know these waters
On the Mississippi (and other prairie rivers) a chute is the old river channel - a bend in the river that is in the process of being cut off. Once it's completely cutoff it will be an oxbow lake. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxbow_lake)
On a mountain river, chute is narrow canyon that drops in elevation so the water gains a lot of speed - too narrow to form rapids, not steep enough to be falls.
A kayak is fun on either.
Getting settled in at the campground. One of my favorite parks to photograph - some awesome Spanish moss and creeping vines in the cypress. Now juat wait until dusk when the crappie and white perch come in close to feed.
(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/p10305518.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/p10305518.php) (http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/p102078012.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/p102078012.php)
^ Very nice.. We have the same Cyprus around here in some lakes and the Crappie love to camp all along them
Finding the right depth and lure is the epic challenge
That's for sure.
And just to mock me, an osprey dove in and caught a small bass about 50 feet past the limit of my cast.
Spectacular pics PackRat! I lived in the swamps of Mississippi for a few years. Some creepy kayak and canoe rides I can tell stories of no one believes...
Unfortunately up here in the frozen tundra, the ice is still 2 to 3 feet thick in most places... :'(
Edit: (39 seconds later) Heck, I still have at least 2 feet of snow blanketing my property. ???
Edit 2: (maybe a minute later than the last edit) ^$#(*46 4 feet still in places close up to the house...
Catch of the day is pan fry sized white perch - but only if you were rigged with the orange fishing line; nothing on the traditional white line. Go figure.

would be eating pretty well if we had kept any.
Another tornado warning (second of the week) cut our day at the pier short. Even the osprey were heading back to the trees.
Still frozen in up here. Snow everywhere, and the lake is still froze over. MOF, I still have over 2 feet of snow in places in my own yard! :'(
There is an extended forecast that says 57F next week! A sauna!!!
57 will be the low here tonight and also the high for tomorrow.. ouch! 45 mile per hour winds though.. constant!
Fished lake Casistas in Ojai yesterday and got three. Biggest was just shy of 8lbs

Nice catch.
Damn son!
What a haul.. what didya catch them on?
Thanks guys! The two smaller fish that I got were on my go to white/chartreuse spinner but that big one was caught on a fly lined live shad on 6# line and an ultralight rod.
I almost never fish live bait but the post spawn lmb bite can be tought out here. The fish get lockjaw and sometimes you just have to put crack in front of them :D
Heres video after I hooked it. I was fishing with my buddy Rich (http://richtauberfishing.com/)
I haven't go fishing in years. But spent three weeks in my homeland up north (it's been a while since I had proper holidays!) One of my sisters and I went fishing almost daily. I think the old bug is biting again. Just a few days back home and eager to go fishing again.
It was mostly horse mackerel, loads of chub mackerel and some varieties of seabream in the low activity mackerel periods (for some reason, at least in that area, where you find horse m, there's chub m. around too). Horse mackerel gets active at night. They use come up close to the surface to eat, but when they're not active even all along the night, chub mackerel seems hungry at all times. ;)
It's curious that those two spices are called mackerel in English. Here we call them different and consider the so called horse mackerel not a mackerel at all. Just a distant relative.
BTW, anyone kayak fishing at sea around here? My sister and I are kicking around the idea of getting a pair for the next summer.
Haven't fished from a kayak or conoe since leaving Minnesota - Lake Superior not exactly the ocean.
Do need to get something like a jon boat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_boat) though. Clear the shore a bit and start hauling in the 5 lb or better bass.
Small fishing runabouts are call tinnies here! :)
Interesting. Similar flat-bottom and flat-ends kinda jon boats were once popular boats amongst fishermen in my area to fish inside the inner waters of the galician rias. They were called "chalana". You don't see them often there days. Well, most old fishermen's boat types have almost disappeared, actually. There's a small movement in Galicia trying to recover traditional boats. But still not a big thing unlike the east coast were these kind of initiatives are much bigger, popular and successful.
Had a fantastic Bluefin trip last week

Off to Mammoth on the 10th..........
Nice
We'll be ocean fishing later in October.
Fishing from the pier at Myrtle Beach; first time my oldest has been salt water fishing -
(https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2017/10/21/P1030875.th.jpg) (https://www.scrot.moe/image/6main) (https://cdn.scrot.moe/images/2017/10/21/P1030877.th.jpg) (https://www.scrot.moe/image/6mxue)
Shark came out from under the pier and stole my hook (someone counted 3 black tips, 5-6 feet hanging out under the pier this afternoon). Some nibbles, that was about it.
I'd get those 5 or 6 feet back on the pier pronto! A shark that long probably wont nibble! ???
catch of the day/trip -

Hello VastOne and hello everyone
Home of the Yellowjackets
Adjacent to the local high school campus is Stinger Lake stocked with Rainbow the first two months of the year.
The first sentence on the Posted Rules:
"Adults must be accompanied by children. ..."
When Georgia eased back the covid restrictions we started fishing there as well as here in South Carolina. On one of the brackish estuaries, my oldest landed this ~50 pound black drum with 8 pound line:

Thats absolutely sick! Beautiful fish. That's a proud dad moment for sure!
wow PackRat she's become quite the fishergal!!! I'm back at the lake house for the last two years now so the lake is empty now. I've caught all the brook trout out of it and have absolutely no pic's on here yet to show for it.
I do have a life but it has been a tough year I'll tell you certain. Waking up from knee surgery this summer was the most painful event so far of my life. I've missed all of you the last year or so and hope to be here more often now. My injury happened on April 16th this spring and pretty much consumed my spring and summer this year. We are now into fall with temp's already getting into the 30's at night. I had to wait apprx. 3 mos for my surgery as I had to have clearance from cardiology. Surgery in July and now 2 mos later I'm walking without a limp for the most part. Total loss of my ACL, tore the MCL and damaged a shit load of meniscus. They cut some of my hamstring out and used it to create a new ACL graft. I had a total dislocation of the knee this spring while working on my truck. Total pain and total gruesomeness I have to say. Just looking at it at the time of the injury was puke inducing!!!
Anyway same ole me otherwise as you can see by the book like entry...
jedi
Also I'm logged back into the IRC channel of OFTC if anyone is still into that sort of thing...
