Post by: Gordon on March 04, 2024, 11:54:53 AM
Hi Folks

I'm trying to get back onto VSIDO. At present I'm on MX I  and don't really like it. I only left because I couldn't get VSIDO to work on the 2019 version. Just been looking at the latest downloads and  I don't understand what's going on as there doesn't seem to be an iso only a list of files and I have no idea what to do with them.
how do I come back? please
don't forget I'm a bit of a numnut always asking stupid questions

cheers
Gordon  :)

Hello Gordon, it is good to see you again. I believe that every question has value and that we will do our best to help.

To get you started, the list of files to download now includes fsarchived files that now install VSIDO which is explained here regarding the return of VSIDO. (https://vsido.org/index.php/topic,1463.0.html)

In this How To link (https://vsido.org/index.php?topic=1465.0) you will find several methods explaining the VSIDO Installation Guide for the fsarchive version and files that you now see. Don't be alarmed at how much information is there, it is several methods to install it. One of them will work for you, and we will help you every step of the way if necessary. If you already have a linux distro installed and have grub running, it will definitely be easier.

Download the fsarchived files, choose the install method you are comfortable with and let's get you back.

Download the latest vsido (may2019) iso and the latest fsarchive vsido_15FEB2024.fsa.

You will be booting from the iso file as usual, but use fsarchiver to install vsido from the vsido_15FEB2024.fsa file - so copy the vsido_15FEB2024.fsa to a separate media. If you can't boot the vsido may2019 installation media, you should be able to use your MX installation media; it should have fsarchiver on it.

Once you have a bootable media and the fsarchive saved to some media, you can follow this How To -

VSIDO installation guide from fsarchive. (https://vsido.org/index.php/topic,1465.0.html)

Read that installation guide all the way through first, then proceed with the installation.

It will need to be on a bootable USB or DVD whichever you burn to.. The bigger question and what will make it much easier is if you have a Linux install on this machine right now. If you do and it uses grub, then you already have grub installed and you can simply use fsarchive from that distro (MX?) and install to a blank partition and then run grub-update and you can then boot to VSIDO

Let us know

Greetings Gordon
download vsido fsa to MX live session persistent. need to install fsarchiver to mx live. Startup the live usb on the target machine.

on installation target drive a partition to hold the downloaded vsido fsa.
on installation target drive a partition for the vsido system will be installed by expanding the archive here. fsa on same drive in different partition. I do this following the How To link.

Hello Gordon and I want to apologize for the issues you are having. The issue is with InMotion, the new hos I have purchased this year has a cap on speed and amount of dload size.. I did not know this until this week and they will be disposed of soon, a new host will be purchased and all this can be resolved

Until then, you can download the VSIDO ISO's and the latest fsarchive files at this link here (https://vsido.fredslev.net/.index.php)

I have edited the link to point to the correct location...

Hi VastOne,
Thanks for that and I'm glad that you managed to sort the problem out.
I've  just downloaded the fsa file without any problem and I also download the 2019 iso again which I'm just about to burn onto a dvd.
hopefully I won't screw it up  :)
Cheers Gordon

Well, I managed to do it again, made a mess of it as usual so i now have to start by installing mx21 again as the vsido 2019 does just the same as the old one. For some reason or other it won't  intall just keeps comming up with error failed to install or a similar message. Back to the drawing board  :)

Gordon, I know that they are broken and will not install properly because the installation tool is broken and cannot be fixed. The 2019 ISO's are kept around to be used as a USB boot device with the tools necessary to troubleshoot a system AND to use in installing the preferred VSIDO install method with the fsarchver versions.

As stated before, if you already have a linux distro installed and I believe you said you had MX, you don't need the 2019 bootable disks as long as you can download fsarchiver. There is also a detailed How To here (https://vsido.org/index.php?topic=1465.0) that takes you through multiple ways to successfully install VSIDO

Is this a perfect method for Linux? No, but it is a working method for VSIDO which has had to deal with 4 different installation methods die out for lack of support over the 12 years we have been doing this. There's plenty of help here to get you going with the fsarchver version

On this page there are several solutions to what is happening. (https://askubuntu.com/questions/232742/failed-to-create-user-due-to-regular-expression-error) In short you are using an invalid character that can be used if you use the allow-bad-names variable. That link will explain it in more detail.

Hi VastOne,
YIPEE.
I'm at last on VSIDO again. It appears that I was only doing one thing wrong with adduser and that was that I was logged in as root and using sudo as well. I dropped sudo and all is well.
Thanks for all your help.
Got another problem now, how do I change the keyboard layout as I have no idea which layout it is using and that going to cause me problems with all my passwords, it's probable the reason that I can't  log on to the  website on my computer.
Cheers Gordon  :)

Standard English keyboard layout is what is the default

You can also run the following from terminal to show you the layout

cat /etc/default/keyboard
It should show you the following

# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

BACKSPACE="guess"

My keyboard is a Microsoft wireless comfort keyboard 5000 so here goes

As root:

dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
First screen is a list of keyboards - Generic 105-key PC is most likely selected. This list is what Debian detects as attached. (correlates to XKBMODEL="pc105")

Select OK, the next screen is the configured layout; English US is default. Scroll down and select "Other"
The available layouts list comes up. English (UK) will be available (or whatever language you need).

Once you make your selection and return to the console, restart the keyboard service (as root):

service keyboard-setup restart
You should have, a English (UK) keyboard setup. If not, you may need to reboot.
