I have already been made aware of and removed the Fluxbox Menu Editor

I need to know what the nmtui tool is.. Is it part of Network-Manager package and also, wouldn't ceni work to connect wireless?

As far as I know, Ceni is deprecated. I don't know if it even works with the new version of Perl and systemd networking.

NetworkManger comes with a ncurses tool nmtui -



it works really well on systemd and non-systemd distros.

No real need to install nm-applet unless you just like a gui system tray application.

So the obvious answer is to replace ceni with network-manager

I can get ceni to work on server side with no issues and yes, it is all vsido   

I am going to go test it for sure on a new install of vsido on this server, what I need is someone to test ceni on a laptop to see if it actually works or not

I tested ceni in a new install and it works for a wired interface no issues.. I understand that it is deprecated .. I was able to install and get nmtui to run but I have questions regarding how it operates.. Does it require sudo / root to run? I will need to figure out how to get that done from a fluxbox menu.. Ceni was cool because it recognizes root is needed and asks for a password

nmtui can be run as a regular user.

  So yeah, ceni is deprecated and on my laptop it runs however it doesn't find the wlan0 connection. (or wlp2s0 etc)  Not sure how this would work out for someone else on a different lappy.  nmtui solves this for most lappy users imo.  Of course one could go to all the trouble of doing it all via the terminal, but with wireless this tends to be a bit of a pain for some. (gasp)  Anyway it definitely works.

So the welcome script, vsido-welcome just needs some lovin' I think... 

The following installed just fine via vsido-welcome;
cups printer-driver-cups-pdf system-config-printer printer-driver-hpijs git git-gui git-cvs git-svn git-email mercurial subversion subversion-tools bzr bzrtools cvs thunar-vcs-plugin geany openssh-server

--Lamp Stack  -not installed because of user preference, I don't need any of it yet...
apache2 mysql-server php5 php-pear php5-gd php5-mysql php5-imagick php5-curl curl phpmyadmin rsync cronolog--  don't know if any of it would have worked.  Doubtful as to the oldish nature of some of the version numbers?

--Dev Env for Debian Packaging  installed via apt
build-essential debhelper cdbs dh-make diffutils patch gnupg fakeroot lintian devscripts dpatch dput quilt zenity clipit bashburn keepassx numlockx-- installed

--Image Editors   installed via apt
gimp inkscape mtpaint gcolor3 shotwell darktable rawtherapee-- installed

--No longer in repo's
dpatch=no candidate, bashburn=no package found, gcolor2=gcolor3 now instead and installed via apt, openjdk-6-jre is up to like 19 now, icedtea6-plugin is now icedtea-netx--  not installed

and oh yeah, cups-pdf is now printer-driver-cups-pdf.

So there, if I missed anything let me know...

Now if I can figure out this new jgmenu toy!!!

I have also attached the changed files in the lib-vsido-welcome.tar.gz listed here. Just extract the files to your /usr/lib/lib-vsido-welcome directory on VSIDO

Thank you for this Jed, a year later I have finally gone through and cleaned up and updated vsido-welcome to its latest versions and it will be available and working again on the next version of the FSA release. I have also attached the changed files in the lib-vsido-welcome.tar.gz listed here. Just extract the files to your /usr/lib/lib-vsido-welcome directory on VSIDO

Anyone who may have downloaded that file, do it again as I have made edits that are now in this latest attached file

I tested the entire vsido-welcome script today, I did a brand new install with the 3 times edited and corrected attached files above and am now 100% confident that they all install without issue with all the latest levels.. I'm sure there are other things we can include and I will dive into that deeper later this winter

So not able to restore the fsa from spacefm. 





Haven't tried the other 2 methods yet, just not on much lately...

Ok so I successfully installed the .fsa file "easy-peasy' using method 1.  It literally boots in about 5 seconds!!  Totally bummed out though as I haven't been able to get the wireless up and connected.  I think that for some of us having been using VSIDO for the last decade and a half, as the goto distro on I can't even imagine how many pc's, laptop's, server's, arm64 devices like Raspberry Pi and more at this point; we're spoiled!

I'm going to dl the latest .fsa again and try a little harder to get the net up and running properly.

The first method I should clarify was done on my own personal build of Sid.  It is a serious HOG.  The latest Cinnamon DE with LightDM for login.  Boots up to about 1.3Gb of RAM. That only leaves me 30Gb's or so for other things!  It's an incredible laptop a buddy gave me and truly runs like a champ.
Being as this is my 'personal' build of Sid, I also am not using the VSIDO installed Spacefm.  It takes considerably longer to boot as well.  But, network issues are non-existent.  Of course that is because Cinnamon is handling it I guess.  I haven't put any effort into it at all really...

So I'll post from VSIDO the next time I post to tell you what I did.  BTW, Laptop is an X1 Extreme 2nd Generation. 32Gb's RAM, 1 TB SSD, 6-core Intel Core i7-9750H (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 799/800/4500 MHz, with Kernel: 6.12.25-amd64 x86_64. It is NOT slow!!!

Uhm, yup I did it again with the btrfs .fsa image this time which of course worked just fine (No go from spacefm though, had to use method 1 from the cli).  Updated grub rebooted and voila there's a VSIDO machine there!  Alas in the VSIDO version, after hours of trying and researching still no wireless.

My original sid/trixie install has wireless working fine.  I'm not currently configured to chase down these things anymore, just don't have the mental health for it!

I'll check back later to see if anyone noticed and has a quick fix...

Ok so my issue with no wireless was pretty bizarre! I'll show you the list of pkg's I installed via dpkg in order to get network access.  Of course as with all VSIDO installs, the system is awesome!  VastOne has obviously built a very tight ship with VSIDO as we're all still here after well over a decade!  Thanks much VastOne, I'm still taking advantage even when you're not looking!  Believe it or not there's been nothing else on my pc's and laptop's since 2012 if memory serves, perhaps a little earlier than that!

Oh yeah, that stuff I installed in order to get connected!  brb with that...



Perhaps not all of the above was needed, but I couldn't get Network Manager to work from the fluxbox menu or the cli and Ceni wasn't picking up any hardware for wireless or ethernet.  That was a first for me btw.  When trying to run the Network Manager from the cli, or nmtui I would get a not installed or configured message that I've forgotten of course!  The last of the message however, was not forgotten or lost;

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of network-manager:
 network-manager depends on libbluetooth3 (>= 4.91); however:
  Package libbluetooth3 is not installed.
 network-manager depends on libndp0 (>= 1.2); however:
  Package libndp0 is not installed.
 network-manager depends on libnm0 (= 1.52.0-6); however:
  Package libnm0 is not installed.
 network-manager depends on libteamdctl0 (>= 1.9); however:
  Package libteamdctl0 is not installed.


I figure you're build sys is not a lappy!!!  Up until now that is!  Congrats on the 'new' hardware.  My last couple of good laptops came from a buddy in the tech industry!  Cheers...
