I'm also looking into this subject, and the following list  is what I have found to be the most helpful.

http://live.debian.net/manual/3.x/html/live-manual.en.html
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=88427
http://docs.kali.org/live-build/live-build-a-custom-kali-iso
http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2013/03/29/how-to-live-build-a-custom-kali-linux-iso-for-kde-lxde-xfce-and-e17/

I have a live-build environment already setup. I have recently tested the install for a sid xfce desktop iso that I built.

What I wanted was the latest installer (Wheezy), and all the packages from sid. I have found that if specify the installer should be either squeeze or wheezy then the installer didn't work. The sid one must be broken.

This is a work in-progress, so there is still much to do, but I can post the scripts I have so far.

I this the Kali scripts are the most likely source for further progress for me! :)

I'm using it, but I did a debian sid install. It just worked.

What are you afraid of getting wet? ;)

I'm assuming that LVM can't be overlayed on an existing partitioned drive. I'd like to know if someone has any ideas about this too.

My current thoughts are that it would be possible by adding another drive and setup LVM on it, and then start moving stuff to it and the recommissioning existing drives to LVM, arranging your stuff as you go as LVM gets bigger. Rather than smoke everything and start again.

I haven't tried this, I'm just assuming it will work.

VSIDO Discussions / Setting up LVM

I'm just wondering whether anyone has any experience with LVM? I don't know much about it but it looks like something I should be using. I have an SSD and a HDD and I have just done a clean build, so before I go too far now would be a time to change. Can I just have /home setup on LVM? Are there any downsides?

Excellent thanks V1! I'll put the debian kernel back and give er a shot! I thinks it's about 10sec boot time already, so this could give me "instant on" !  :o

I thought I might download the iso again in the mean time.

Hey jedi! Thanks for the quick reply. ;)
I got to the point of selecting the drive to install and was expecting gparted to then display but it didn't. And when straight to the asking for swap info.

The problem is that gparted didn't start and allow me to create the partition, the rest of the install was therefore a failure.

I've used Vb many times over the years, and I've already created a win7 vm on the new pc yesterday.
