Title: Fishing appears to be popular with this group
Post by: PackRat on July 26, 2014, 05:30:04 PM
Made our second trip to the lake over the weekend.

My oldest caught her first fish ever -

I, on the other hand, caught me a nice new rod and reel -

I wish.

We are now after our nemesis - I had something big hit a good sized lure last Friday, and the wife had something big break her line on Sunday in the same area of the lake. Got a decent look at what broke my wife's line - saw about 18 inches of the back of what appears to be a muskie or pickerel.

Problem is, this is the first time I've fished in the SE USA (been here 2 years). I am use to fly fishing for trout, steelhead, or salmon. Haven't done any bass or pike fishing since I left Minnesota back in 2007.

So it's game on.

Went back to the lake to try and land the big one.

(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/f1500.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/f1500.php)

Too much wind knocking down by casts so I was ending up about 20 meters short of his domain. Managed to land a 8 inch perch and 8 inch crappie but tossed them back. Using a simple jig and single hook all day.

 I need a boat!

Fished San Clemente island for two days. Bite was slow but I ended up with a couple Yellowfin, two skipjack and two big bonita.

25lb yellowfin on a heavy bass rod..... just because I can  :D

Thanks everyone!

@ packrat

Yes sir, it's an Abu Garcia revo toro nacl 50hs. It's a baitcaster that is intended for saltwater. It's sealed so that the salt doesn't destroy the inside of the reel.

I absolutely love the reel and think it's worth every penny. For bigger fish you just don't have the same power with a spinner.
What reel did you buy? I have a few different models but I swear by the Abu Garcia offshore/revo Toro and daiwa lexa. Both are just amazing.

Lews makes a good product. Ive never used their reels but my brother had a red speedstick and I liked it a lot.
Title: Re: Fishing appears to be popular with this group
Post by: PackRat on October 06, 2014, 01:59:20 AM
Yep, there is a fountain in the lake. Could see the bass coming and hitting the surface right past the edge of ripples caused by the fountain, but they were not biting anything today. Crappie in the morning and perch in the afternoon.

@lwfits - it's a pretty low end reel; but the wife and the oldest are all in with the fishing so I can see some upgrades coming. Wife snapped my rod in half the other day (one of has to watch the youngest while the other fishes), and my oldest broke the tip off another one - which I could fix. I am going to have to give a seminar on "What to do when you get hung up on snags/rocks" .

Sorry to butt in but this made me rofl.  If you are successful with your training let me know I have an 86 year old father and 25 year old daughter that have many years of training and very little in learning ... but they love to fish and I won't discourage them.  One of the few things my Pop still really enjoys.  If you can videotape that "seminar" bet you could sell a few thousand copies!   Great pics and even though I am not doing much fishing these days am vicariously enjoying the stories.

That's what I thought it was (and what my wife thought she hooked). The youngest and I are actually home recovering today, when I saw the picture I thought they had a nice sized bass, but noticed the head was a bit wrong. Figured it was a catfish of some sort and my daughter was covering the whiskers. As big a crappie as I've ever seen.

Wife made some gumbo out of the other crappie and blue gill we've caught this summer, yum.

She's becoming quite the expert. The bass and crappie weren't biting so she suggested we go to the creek for some bluegill just to get some action. Second cast she found the school and we slayed them for a couple hours. She caught 7 and I caught 1 - and I've been hearing about ever since. She and mom are heading out bass - and hopefully that big muskie - tomorrow.

Remember to tie a rope to your auger and lash it to something. The very definition of a sinking feeling when it breaks through the ice and slips out of your numb fingers.

What weird looking fishes you have around there  :P

I used to fish a lot when I was a kid. Now i only do it occasionally if I have the chance to go north to my homeland on summer holidays. We use to spend evenings fishing in family. But never in a river. Always in the sea. Nicer looking swimning bugs there.

You cannot find clams in beaches in Northern Spain anymore. Only in protected areas. Mussels at most... But not recommended to eat them unless fully depurated.

Decided to brave the cold front and head to the lake because the striped bass have been biting all week.

Totally skunked, but a good 3-4 hours of solitude; pretty much had the lake to myself.

Pretty sure that muskie - or possibly a gar - sheared my line again; 20lb test this time. Have to rig up something that will hold that s.o.b.

^ Solitude is heavenly.... the older I get the more I crave it

You using good leaders when dealing with fish with teeth?
Title: Re: Fishing appears to be popular with this group
Post by: PackRat on January 09, 2015, 09:54:36 PM
That's what I need is some heavy leaders.

Usually out there fishing for bass and crappie, but I think the apex predator in this cove is a 3-4 foot gar or muskie. Seems to hang out about 60-80 feet or so right off the pier. With no wind I can hit his spot with a small-mid size jig. I need to set up a stronger lead though; haven't done this kind of fishing since I left Minnesota in 1987 - fishing for northern pike using rubber duckies as bait.

The wife and daughter have told me a smaller gar has made it's home just below the pier and patrols the shoreline. May have to rethink my whole strategy for fishing this cove.

Still too use to fly fishing in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada when I was living in Reno.

Speaking of which, my fly rod sheared in two the other day - just old and brittle - so i need to put a new one of those on the list.

^ Solitude is heavenly.... the older I get the more I crave it

Boy thats the truth! I dont fish alone much anymore but I used to and it was fantastic. For me theres nothing better than putting in headphones and walking a beach throwing lures.

@ PackRat
Try using florocarbon leaders. Florocarbon is invisible underwater unlike mono and you could up your line weight without sacrificing how much your catching. Also florocarbon is more resilient to abrasion and teeth.

Went out yesterday with some friends to kill a yellowtail or two. Landed one, handed one off to a friend to fight and broke off three or four.
We had a slight sprinkle until around 130pm when it really started coming down and we decided to head back.

Those fun to fight and haul in?  How long of a fight?

You got a little bloody too... just from the fish?  What do you do with the fish also?
Title: Re: Fishing appears to be popular with this group
Post by: lwfitz on January 12, 2015, 03:21:02 AM
Thanks buddy!

They are extremely fun to fish. They hit hard and run for the rocks so generally heavy line and an even heavier drag is recommended.
The first one I got was on a reel with 300 yards of 50lb braid (thickness of 12lb) and a 20lb florocarbon leader. That fish weighed about 25lbs and almost spooled me before I got him stopped and then it took about 25 min to land after that.
The second fish I hooked was on a heavier setup with 50lb braid and a 30lb leader. This fish stripped off 200 yards of line in about 30 seconds and took 20 min to land.

Yellowtail fight hard and are extremely smart. They run for rocks/reefs/kelp, anything that they can break you off in.

Like tuna its necessary to bleed the fish before it dies to keep the quality of the meat good. It wouldnt make you sick if you didnt bleed it but it wont taste very good. unfortunately this means that blood gets everywhere.

My customers love me. I supply many of them with fresh or fresh frozen (vacuum sealed) fish. Far better than anything youll get from a restaurant or the grocery store. Then what I dont give away I get to eat lol

Came close. She was using a small sunfish my oldest caught as bait and had her rod secured to a tree while I stayed at the lake casting. I heard him breach and saw the ripples at the furthest edge of the cypress. 30 seconds later, her line goes taught and starts to spool out. Damn fish took off; crossed my line and went into the cypress roots. By the time I cut my line free, and the wife got hers out of the cypress he had stolen the bait.

According to the park ranger, it is most likely a gar prowling the edge of the cypress. Switched to some metal leads today, but too windy with the thunderstorms passing through the area, nothing biting.

Only catch of the day -

@lwfitz, GREAT crappies man!

@ Mr RatMan, awesome picture!

Out today in Wisconsin, my favorite place to fish... Have not fished there in 18 years. My favorite to fish for are smallies and walleyes... No smallies today but I did catch my first walleye in 18 years also.

We also saw a Bald Eagle come extremely close to us and the water, that was pretty cool

^ That lake is where the Appalachians come through the Carolinas into Georgia. My wife and oldest are still there; I came back with the youngest to do all the school registration.

She says she had a 4-pound bass (mostly small mouth) break her line yesterday just as she had him at the surface. I would have taken partial credit if she had landed it since I told her to go out on this little used dock at the other end of the park instead of fishing from shore by the cabin.

But since she lost it, it's all on her  :P  She knows when it comes in for dinner though, so she better go back for it tonight.

Annual, summer fishing vacation this week. (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/devilsfork/introduction.aspx)

Nice and warm early summer.

Fairly easy to do when the rocks are angular:

(http://s33.postimg.org/qm8r8mdjv/2016_06_10_16_26_27_502.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/qm8r8mdjv/)

Off to a rough start - just about done with baitcast reels, but it has become a quest to master this thing:

(http://s33.postimg.org/8ai3rh4wr/2016_06_10_16_58_21_752.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/8ai3rh4wr/)

Ended up keeping one smallmouth bass and mid-sized sunfish for chow tomorrow. Also had a pounder sunfish, but he jumped out of the bucket.

Switched it up and went fishing for trout -

(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/p10304158.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/p10304158.php)

My kind of fishing - how I miss my fly rod!

Pointed out a couple spots and we caught/released a couple 6-8 inch pan fries. No trout after that though - too hot. Caught and released a 6-inch catfish.

Nope; living out in South Carolina these days. Bass, catfish, and crappie fishing these days. Not much in the way of trout or fly fishing.

Oldest got a salt-resistant rod and reel last year for birthday #10, still need to make it back to the coast and break that one in. I'd like to head out to Beaufort and do some clamming/oyster digging while we're at it. Alligators are a bit to numerous for that though when you have to keep one eye on the kids as well.

Your daughters are very beautiful!  Better that you have them fishing than playing with computers or video games.  If only all parents were like you.  Most kids today are raised by a 'screen'.  Memories like the ones your making with them, priceless.  They'll always look back at these moments and really treasure their father!

They do the video game thing too - but it's easy enough to get them out and about.

We'll be heading to Musgrove Mill State Park (http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/musgrovemill/introduction.aspx) for our First Day hike. First Day hikes are a Park Service promotional to get people out and about - preferably at a State Park - after over eating on the holidays. We did Rivers Bridge last year. I DVR every second of coverage of the Masters to watch when the sun goes down and then go fish and golf my ass off...

I have found a massive amount of new spots to fish very close to where I live .. had no idea they were even there and looking forward to really getting to know them

They are chutes .. do not know why they are called that, off the Mississippi River.. they are basically the boarder between Missouri and Kentucky.. and a lot like inter-coastal waters in Florida

I am looking for a kayak or small canoe to really get to know these waters
Title: Re: Fishing appears to be popular with this group
Post by: PackRat on April 01, 2017, 12:45:28 AM
On the Mississippi (and other prairie rivers) a chute is the old river channel - a bend in the river that is in the process of being cut off. Once it's completely cutoff it will be an oxbow lake. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxbow_lake)

On a  mountain river, chute is narrow canyon that drops in elevation so the water gains a lot of speed - too narrow to form rapids, not steep enough to be falls.

A kayak is fun on either.

Spectacular pics PackRat!  I lived in the swamps of Mississippi for a few years.  Some creepy kayak and canoe rides I can tell stories of no one believes...

Unfortunately up here in the frozen tundra, the ice is still 2 to 3 feet thick in most places...  :'(

Edit: (39 seconds later) Heck, I still have at least 2 feet of snow blanketing my property.  ???
Edit 2: (maybe a minute later than the last edit)  ^$#(*46 4 feet still in places close up to the house...

Catch of the day is pan fry sized white perch - but only if you were rigged with the orange fishing line; nothing on the traditional white line. Go figure.

(http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/img20170405101701460.jpg) (http://en.zimagez.com/zimage/img20170405101701460.php)

would be eating pretty well if we had kept any.

Another tornado warning (second of the week) cut our day at the pier short. Even the osprey were heading back to the trees.

I almost never fish live bait but the post spawn lmb bite can be tought out here. The fish get lockjaw and sometimes you just have to put crack in front of them   :D

Heres video after I hooked it. I was fishing with my buddy  Rich (http://richtauberfishing.com/)

I haven't go fishing in years. But spent three weeks in my homeland up north (it's been a while since I had proper holidays!) One of my sisters and I went fishing almost daily. I think the old bug is biting again. Just a few days back home and eager to go fishing again.

It was mostly horse mackerel, loads of chub mackerel and some varieties of seabream in the low activity mackerel periods (for some reason, at least in that area, where you find horse m, there's chub m. around too). Horse mackerel gets active at night. They use come up close to the surface to eat, but when they're not active even all along the night, chub mackerel seems hungry at all times.   ;)

It's curious that those two spices are called mackerel in English. Here we call them different and consider the so called horse mackerel not a mackerel at all. Just a distant relative.

BTW, anyone kayak fishing at sea around here? My sister and I are kicking around the idea of getting a pair for the next summer.

Haven't fished from a kayak or conoe since leaving Minnesota - Lake Superior not exactly the ocean.

Do need to get something like a jon boat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_boat) though. Clear the shore a bit and start hauling in the 5 lb or better bass.

Interesting. Similar flat-bottom and flat-ends kinda jon boats were once popular boats amongst fishermen in my area to fish inside the inner waters of the galician rias. They were called "chalana". You don't see them often there days. Well, most old fishermen's boat types have almost disappeared, actually. There's a small movement in Galicia trying to recover traditional boats. But still not a big thing  unlike the east coast were these kind of initiatives are much bigger, popular and successful.

Shark came out from under the pier and stole my hook (someone counted 3 black tips, 5-6 feet hanging out under the pier this afternoon). Some nibbles, that was about it.

I'd get those 5 or 6 feet back on the pier pronto!  A shark that long probably wont nibble!   ???
